Newmarket-based trainer William Haggas holds a strong hand in Saturday’s Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill Gardens with the talented Addeybb lining up.

The lightly-raced six-year-old son of Pivotal boasts seven wins and four placings from 15 starts, including a last start 2nd placing behind star galloper Magical in the Group 1 Champion Stakes (2012m) at Ascot.

Addeybb also scored a 2.5-lengths victory over Magic Wand before that mare was runner-up to Bricks And Mortar at Arlington, and Magical in the Irish Champion (2012m) at Leopardstown.

Magic Wand was 4th in the Cox Plate, 10th in the Melbourne Cup and proved too strong in claiming the Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes (2000m) over Melody Belle and Hartnell.

So, we know the form of Addeybb is first class, but my one concern is he’s not here for the Ranvet Stakes – he’s here for the $4 million Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) on April 11.

He may be simply too good for them, but I’m willing to take him on at this stage with a horse that is rock-hard-fit and is unbeaten in three starts at Rosehill.

The James Cummings-trained Avilius scored an emphatic win over UK raider He’s Eminent in last year’s Ranvet Stakes, and his preparation this time has been quite similar.

Last autumn, Avilius went into the Ranvet fourth-up having finished 5th in the Australian Cup at Flemington, and this year he also goes into the Ranvet fourth-up after a 5th placing in the Australian Cup.

Both performances rated 9.8 and 9.2 lengths quicker than standard BM, so there is no reason to suggest he’s not going as good as last year.

Like Addeybb, Avilius is also a six-year-old son of Pivotal, however, Avilius has the experience at Rosehill Gardens, while he also has a fitness edge and won’t be feeling the pinch late in the piece.

Verry Elleegant looms as a danger and watch for market moves on Norway who has his first Australian start for Chris Waller.
