RANVET STAKES TIPS & PREVIEW

Looking for Ranvet Stakes tips and best bets? We dissect times and form to find the winner of the 2022 Ranvet Stakes at Rosehill.

Tips will be available following the barrier draw. See our 2021 preview below for an example of what to expect.

The Ranvet Stakes changes complexion after the Slipper meeting was moved to Saturday March 27. Originally we had a field of five accept for the first of the Group 1 races and it looked like a match-race between Verry Elleegant and Addeybb

That pair fought out the 2020 edition of the race and skipped five lengths clear of the rest of the field that day. Addeybb led all the way and looked to be in trouble when Verry Elleegant issued the challenge in the straight but fought back tenaciously to hold on.

The new-look line up includes both Colette and the Cox Plate (2040m) winner, Sir Dragonet. Addeybb has been installed as a $2.10 favourite with NEDS, while Verry Elleegant is at $2.80. Colette is a $6 chance, while Sir Dragonet heads the rest at $13.

Addeybb looms as the likely leader again and went very slow up in front last year in the early stages before going 9.4 lengths faster than standard over the last 600m.

The gelding from the U.K. was first up off a 22 week break last year after finishing runner-up to the world-class galloper, Magical, in the Champion Stakes (2012m) at Ascot. He had his most recent start in that race last year, winning by more than two lengths from Skaletti.

Last year, Verry Elleegant headed into the Ranvet with two runs under her belt and was runner-up behind Te Akau Shark in the Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m). She won that race this year ahead of Colette.

The Chris Waller-trained galloper heads into this third up and took out the Turnbull Stakes (2000m) at this stage of her last preparation, going 10 lengths faster than standard.

In the Ranvet Stakes last year, she settled just behind Addeybb but we can expect to see Angel Of Truth and Colette just behind the speed with Verry Ellegant possibly three back on the rails after drawing barrier 1.

The mare missed out on both occasions to Addeybb last year with the import winning the Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) by three lengths on a Heavy track at Randwick from Verry Elleegant. He is a deserved favourite for mine.

In terms of the others in this race, Colette comes right into play on the wet track and is unbeaten on Soft or worse. The Godolphin galloper defeated Verry Elleegant on a Soft 7 earlier this preparation, while her personal best benchmark figure of 12.9 lengths faster than standard came on the Heavy in the Adrian Knox Stakes (2000m) at Randwick last year.

Sir Dragonet is capable of improvement but I would have liked to have seen better from him in his two runs this campaign, while we can almost rule out Master Of Wine, who has generally been well beaten by Verry Ellegant the fives times they have met.

He finished within a length of the mare in the Turnbull Stakes at Flemington last year when 5th at his third run back and had some excuses when 4th on the Heavy in last year’s Queen Elizabeth.

Roughie players might look to consider Miami Bound, who did go 14 lengths faster than standard when 7th in the recent Australian Cup (2000m), while she thrived on Soft going at Moonee Valley on Cox Plate day last year when taking out the Moonee Valley Cup (2500m), going 16.2 lengths faster than standard. That figure has only been bettered by Sir Dragonet, who went 16.3 lengths faster than standard when 6th in a fast run Melbourne Cup (3200m).

Ranvet Stakes Tips & Verdict

Verry Elleegant does have the edge in fitness but came in with the same profile last year and threw everything at Addeybb but could not nail that horse. Given their previous head to head meetings, it is hard to find a possible chink in the armour of Addeybb based on those results so I am giving that galloper the nod. Colette comes into consideration, while Miami Bound is worth including in multiples.
