A strong pattern can be noted in the Surround Stakes where it is generally fillies that have performed well in the Flight Stakes or an equivalent 1600m G1 that go on with it here.

Probabeel claimed victory last year following a 2nd placing in the Flight Stakes, and prior to that, Nakeeta Jane won after her 3rd in the Flight.

In 2018 Shoals won the Surround following a win in the Myer Classic (1600m) in the spring, and in 2017, Kiwi filly La Bella Diosa won having taken out the NZ 1000 Guineas (1600m) in her previous campaign.

The list goes on and on…

In 2021, the Flight Stakes First 4 of Montefilia, Hungry Heart, Vangelic and Dame Giselle line up with the winner resuming from a spell while the other trio are second-up.

Three of the past five winners have been second-up and the other two where first-up so each fit the mould.

Dame Giselle is unbeaten in three second-up runs and she was very brave splitting the boys in the $1 million Inglis Sprint (1200m) where she just peaked on her run late.

She jumped best in the Inglis Sprint but was restrained to take cover from the wide gate and ended up drifting back to the rear.

She’ll jump from barrier 9 on Saturday but shouldn’t have too much trouble getting in with cover one or two pairs off the lead.

Dame Giselle may have finished 4th in the Flight Stakes but she had the wood on those other horses in the Furious Stakes (1200m) and Tea Rose Stakes (1400m) prior to that.

I thought Hungry Heart and Vangelic were disappointing first-up in the Light fingers Stakes (1200m), and with Montefilia being aimed at distance races like the Oaks and Derby, she might be further from her top than the others.

La Mexicana has been airborne in Melbourne and faces a tough challenge heading north, but you can’t knock winning form and she’s certainly among the top chances.

Dame Giselle ticks more boxes in a very open race, and she’s a deserved favourite at $4.80.
