The Tancred Stakes is one of the highlights of the Rosehill autumn and has been won by some champion gallopers over the years.
The 2022 edition features the Cox Plate (2040m) winner, Sir Dragonet, as well New Zealand’s champion mare, Melody Belle. There are also a number of handy stayers that are on the Sydney Cup (3200m) path.
Sir Dragonet is a $5 favourite in markets with NEDS and comes out of the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m), that was taken out by Verry Elleegant from Addeybb. Those two aren’t lining up in the Tancred but the 3rd placegetter, Angel Of Truth ($8.50), is in action, as is Miami Bound, who finished 8th last weekend and is at the $26 quote.
The Ranvet does appear to be the pick of the local form and both Angel Of Truth and Sir Dragonet went more than six lengths faster than standard benchmark. They went slow in the early stages of that race with Angel Of Truth leading them up.
The 2019 Australian Derby (2400m) winner fought on but didn’t have the class to go with the other two. Sir Dragonet came from 5th at the 400m and was wide on the turn but produced the third fastest last 400m, just behind the winning pair.
Five horses come out of the Sky High Stakes (2000m) that was taken out by Toffee Tongue. Spirit Ridge filled the exacta behind that horse and that pair produced slightly superior benchmark figures than Angel Of Truth and Sir Dragonet.
Toffee Tongue was third up in that race and did produce a peak run by going 10.6 lengths faster than standard when third up with a runner-up performance behind Verry Elleegant in the Turnbull Stakes (2000m) at Flemington in the spring. She then dropped down slightly to 8.5 lengths faster when 14th in the Caulfield Cup (2400m) with just 51kg. That run is a concern for me.
Spirit Ridge was first up off a nine week break and is open to improvement. The lightly raced six-year-old went 12.5 lengths faster than standard in the Summer Cup (2000m) at Randwick when third up on Boxing Day.
That personal best is dwarfed by a number of others including Sir Dragonet, who went 16.3 lengths faster than standard after his 2040m Cox Plate run in the spring, sticking on for 6th in a hot Melbourne Cup (3200m).
Melody Belle has regularly run more than 10 lengths faster than standard when racing in Australia and will attract support. She bounced back from a shock defeat with victory in the Bonecrusher Stakes (2000m) at her last start and comes into consideration if the track is wet.
Pace could be a factor and Angel Of Truth can remain in the hunt for a long way, while Spirit Ridge should settled handy. Expect Toffee Tongue to be in the first half, while the big guns in Melody Belle and Sir Dragonet will be in a midfield position. Tempo doesn’t looks to be fast, but genuine enough to give most their chance.
Tancred Stakes Tips & Verdict
With a number of others on the Sydney Cup path, the main chances on past form and figures for mine are Sir Dragonet, Angel Of Truth, Spirit Ridge and Melody Belle. Of that quartet, I am most keen on Sir Dragonet to take this out. He has been a bit slow to get going this preparation but that Melbourne Cup run may have taken a bit out of the sting out of him and I loved the way he closed in the Ranvet when getting up to the 2000m. His form above that trip is world class so he should be open to further improvement, while Glen Boss sticks on board.
