THE GOODWOOD HISTORY

Adelaide’s premier event takes place at Morphettville Racecourse annually in May during the Adelaide Autumn Racing Carnival and is a set-weights plus penalties race for horses aged three-years-old and upwards.

First run in 1881, The Goodwood was won by D.O.D when it was a Principal race and run over one mile (1600m).

The race distance was shortened to 1200m in 1886 and inherited its current conditions in 2007 after being run as a handicap for the first 126 years of its history.

With $750,000 in prizemoney, The Goodwood is the richest race in Adelaide. The Goodwood can field a capacity number of 20 runners.

The race has always attracted high-quality sprinters and in 2012, Australia’s most famous sprinter, Black Caviar, made her second appearance at Morphettville Racecourse when she cruised to victory in front of 30,000 racegoers.

Interestingly, Black Caviar’s Grand Dam, Scandinavia, finished second to Spectrum in the 1998 running of The Goodwood.

Other famous horses to win the race include Mostyn (1894-95), Musket Belle (1911-12), Aurie’s Star (1940), Royal Gem (1946), Euclase (1992), Keeper (2001), Super Elegant (2004), Let Go Thommo (2007) and Takeover Target (2009) and Santa Ana Lane (2018).

As the race attracts not only South Australia’s best sprinters, but a number of Victorian and New South Wales raiders, most of them Group 1 fringe horses, there is no distinguishable lead-up race into The Goodwood with past winners having come from over half a dozen different feature races.

Being one of South Australia’s most famous race days, The Goodwood is complimented by the Group 3 RA Lee Stakes (1600m), Group 3 National Stakes (1200m), Group 3 SA Fillies Classic (2500m), Group 3 Queens Cup (2500m) and the Group 3 Proud Miss Stakes (1200m).

MORPHETTVILLE RACECOURSE

Morphettville Racecourse is South Australia’s largest and premier race track and plays host to up to 70 days of racing action throughout the year.

Located less than 10km from the Adelaide CBD, Morphettville’s race meetings are split between its two tracks; the Morphettville course proper and the Morphettville Parks circuit.

The Parks was official opened in June 2009 and being the inside circuit it has a smaller diameter and is narrower than the course proper.

The SAJC created a world first when installing a retractable winning post with hydraulics that enables the flexibility to alternate the running of races with minimal damage to both tracks.

Morphettville’s race meetings are split between its two tracks; the Morphettville course proper and the Morphettville Parks circuit.

The Parks was official opened in June 2009 and being the inside circuit it has a smaller diameter and is narrower than the course proper.

Since the track’s resurfacing in 2002, it has been rated as the best racecourse in the Southern Hemisphere.

With its wide and open course, Morphettville remains one of the fairest circuits for horses to race on.
