TJ SMITH STAKES TIPS & PREVIEW
Looking for TJ Smith Stakes tips and best bets? We dissect times and form to find the winner of the 2022 TJ Smith Stakes at Randwick.
Tips will be available following the barrier draw. See our 2021 preview below for an example of what to expect.
The sprinters are set to scorch over the 1200m at Randwick in the TJ Smith Stakes, a race made famous in recent years by the likes of Chautauqua and Black Caviar.
Nature Strip is the reigning champion and led all the way on a Heavy track last year to defeat Santa Ana Lane and Redzel. The Chris Waller-traiend galloper has been installed as a $3.70 favourite with NEDS after the barrier draw ahead of the recent Galaxy (1100m) winner, Eduardo, while Bivouac is at the $5.50. Masked Crusader and Haut Brion Her are others under double figure odds and are both $8.50.
The likes of Nature Strip and Eduardo have been absolutely flying at the moment. The pair clashed in the Challenge Stakes (1000m) at Randwick and cleared out from the others. Nature Strip led and was grabbed on the line by Eduardo.
The winner set a personal best by going a whopping 19.9 lengths faster than standard. He has since gone 17.5 lengths fast than standard when carrying 57kg to victory in the Galaxy, winning that race by nearly four lengths.
Nature Strip went 19.8 lengths faster than standard in the Concorde, which is also a personal best. He dropped four lengths on figures when third up in this race last year but was still good enough to win.
Eduardo is third up and split Classique Legend and Bivouac in the Shorts (1100m) at a similar stage last time before dropping out of it in the Everest. In a bit of a catch-22, he is hard to have on his run in the Everest but impossible to ignore on recent performances.
Three other runners come out of the Galaxy but meet Eduardo worse at the weights. They are Order Of Command, Dirty Work and Haut Brion Her. It is hard to see that trio turning the tables.
Bivouac will need to improve on his last start performance and went just 4.2 lengths faster than standard when 4th in the Canterbury Stakes (1300m). But the Godolphin galloper set a personal best by going 16 lengths faster than standard last year when third up last spring, taking out the VRC Sprint Classic (1200m) by more than three lengths from Nature Strip. We can expect improvement but I am just not sure he is going as well this time around.
Masked Crusader claimed the recent William Reid Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley in Melbourne and went 11 lengths faster than standard that night. They didn’t go hard early on and that made it hard for September Run, who settled back before rocketing home out wide for 4th.
She produced the fastest last 200m in that race but couldn’t quite catch Libertini, who was 3rd. That horse first up in that race and has held her figures when second up in the past. September Run heads into this fourth up and picked up the Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) at the same stage in the spring. The daughter of Exceed And Excel has attracted support in the early betting and shapes as a value bet.
Zoutori took out the Newmarket Handicap (1200m) at his most recent start, going 12 lengths faster than standard but has a moderate record against the likes of Nature Strip and Bivouac in the past.
TJ Smith Stakes Tips & Verdict
I am keen on Eduardo on the back of his two runs this time in. He nailed Nature Strip over the 1000m and defied the weight to absolutely fly in the Galaxy. While he missed out at the track and trip in the Everest last year, he did win the Missile Stakes (1200m) earlier that preparation so the distance shouldn’t be a concern, while he does seem to be going much better than six months ago. September Run is another contender that presents appeal at the price.
