Hedley has a monopoly on the Townsville Cup
- Hedley dominates the Cup field with six runners
This year’s $150K Townsville Cup is an open affair as astute owner Tom Hedley dominates the field with six of the 16 runners.
Tom HedleyAs is usually the case, the race will have several visitors from down south, headed by Hardern and Savwell, the minor placegetters of the Mackay Cup.
Hedley is yet to win the coveted North Queensland event and has his best chance yet with several of his six runners well in the market.
One such runner is the current race favourite The Harrovian, at $4.20 with Sportsbet, who has won four of his six starts this preparation, finishing second in his other two starts.
In his preparation for the Cup, the Steve Massingham-trained gelding finished second in the NQ Cup (1609m), beaten a short head by Hardern who is another of the Hedley-owned horses, trained by Michael Geaney.
Michael Geaney won the Cup last year applying daring tactics with his mare Lady Skills who, ridden by Chelsea Jokic, led all the way to beat home race favourite Chivadahlii.
Hedley’s other runners are Crimson Halo, Follow Suit, Vassal and Estikhraaj.
Horses that could stand in the way of Hedley holding up his first Townsville Cup could be the David Vandyke-trained Savwell who finished second in the Rockhampton Cup and then a close-up third in the Mackay Cup behind Ipswich Cup winner Bergerac.
Unbiased is another interesting runner trained by Rockhampton-based Jared Wehlow.
The six-year-old Medaglia D’Oro gelding was formerly with Tamworth trainer Cody Morgan and was transferred to Wehlow’s stables in June this year.
He has had three starts for his new stable with his latest effort being a big win in open class at Townsville over the Cup distance of 2000m where he put more than four lengths on his opposition.
My Townsville Cup predictions are:
1. Unbiased2. Savwell3. Hardern4. The Harrovian
