Casterton Tips July 29 – Tonteria represents value at Casterton

  • Casterton Racing Preview

We start the working week with a nine-race card at Casterton, on a Soft 6 track with the rail in the true position. My best bet comes up in race seven, with the Simon Morrish-trained Tonteria.
Race 7 – 3:30pm Heywood Cup @ Casterton BM58 Handicap (1100m)It looks like a tricky day for betting at Casterton but the Simon Morrish-trained TONTERIA is a terrific each-way play at upwards of $7.00. The eight-year-old is an honest galloper, and although his best runs are behind him, with a peak figure of 11.5 lengths above benchmark when less than a length behind Heptagon in a Metro race 18 months ago now, he is in good enough form to be winning this. He contested a race at this track and distance two starts ago and was narrowly beaten behind Sleek Acheeva, running 1.9 lengths above class benchmark while running the third-fastest last 400m and 600m of the meeting. Sleek Acheeva then went to Ballarat at his next start and was only a neck away from the very talented Our Wind Spirit. His last start effort at Murtoa was full of merit, sitting outside the leader and eventual winner Cataracta, who looks very smart and battling away into second, beating home Manhattan Spirit who finished fourth and is favourite for this race. I liked the map for him here, as Jarrod Lorensini has options from barrier five. He could push forward and lead but it is more likely he sits either outside leader or one-out and one-back. I think $7.00 is a very good price, as I had him priced $4.60.
