Proving a hard galloper to follow, HAUNTING SPIRIT lines up for the 22nd time in an attempt to crack maiden status. The Snitzel gelding ended his last campaign on a sour note when finishing more than a dozen lengths from the winner in a Newcastle maiden over 1885m, giving the impression he is not a fan of racing beyond the mile. He then spent the next five months in the paddock before returning to work. After an uninspiring trial, finishing last of four at Warwick Farm, he returned to the track where he finished unplaced in his first two runs at Hawkesbury and Goulburn. Not a great sales pitch for today, however, his last run was somewhat encouraging. Third-up, in a field of nine at Wyong, he gave a much improved performance, finishing second on a Heavy 8 over the 1350m trip. Ironically, he beaten home by a horse called Now Or Never which would put a smirk on anyone’s face. Today, however, there appears to be light at the end of the tunnel. He draws the fence here and after the claim, will carry 4kgs less than last start which is a noticeable reduction, particularly on wet track. The $400K purchase has no less than 10 minor placings on his resume which is about as frustrating as it comes but he gets a golden opportunity to turn it around here. Surely, today.

The Clarry Connors-trained LIGHT CHARGE looks a good each-way chance in this line-up today. The Warwick Farm visitor has been thereabouts this preparation until last start when she finally got the breaks to bring up her first win this time in. On a heavy Goulburn track, she took on her own sex in a BM58 over 1300m. That day, she settled in the box-seat and on straightening, pulled out wide, took over passing the 200m mark, and that was that. With Jean Van Overmeire in the saddle and carrying 58.5kgs, the Charge Forward mare went on to win by more than a length on the line. Today, she faces mixed company and carries the same weight. Van Overmeire remains aboard and drawn the fence here, looks a solid top-three chance.
