Here are our Cowra tips for today.

Bathurst galloper THE DROVER (best odds $2.80 with bet365) has improved with every start this preparation and in this contest looks well placed to crack his first win for this campaign. Last start, the Bon Hoffa gelding beat all but one home in a BM66 over 1400m at Orange. He raced very ungenerously in the home straight, giving Grant Buckley all sorts of trouble but still managed second prize on the day. The stable have reacted to his antics with a bag full of gear changes including the return of the blinkers which should settle him better. On debut here today, he maps to settle just behind the pace from gate four and with a trouble-free run, his first look at the Cowra track could be a winning one.

Second-up today, the Darren Hyde-trained WESTLINK (best odds $8.50 with Sportsbet) hasn’t seen the Cowra track for almost three years but is good enough (on his day) to give this contest a real shake. Last start, the Casino Prince gelding was resuming off a lengthy six-month absence when he finished down the track in a Wagga Open Hcp over 1200m, although beaten just three lengths in the run home. He ran his last 600m, 3 lengths quicker than benchmark, the best in this field. He is well drawn in gate three and maps to settle in the back-half of the field with Nick Heywood aboard for the first time. He hasn’t won in more than 15 months but won his only start here and is a second-up winner. Expect improvement today.

The market suggests this year’s Cup is a three-horse affair with all other runners at double figures and the ever-consistent ATHENA’S LAD (best odds $4 with bet365) looks the pick of the crop. Last start, the Albrecht gelding was fresh off a 12-week spell when he took on a Class 3 field at Gilgandra and proved too good for them that day with Jake Pracey-Holmes aboard. Prior to that, he put in a solid effort in a Class 3 Hwy Hcp at Randwick where he collected third prize that day. Nicely drawn in gate five here, he maps to settle in the first half-dozen and has Pracey-Holmes sticking with him, (who is two from two with the five-year-old). He finished fourth here three starts back and already a winner when second-up, he looks a genuine contender in this field.
