Race 3 - 2:25PM SOMERTON HOTEL BENCHMARK 58 HANDICAP (2050 METRES)
Down sharply in grade today, Walcha galloper PLAYING FOR KEEPS (best odds currently $9.50 with Palmerbet) is shooting for the hat-trick today and looks drawn to give it a real shake. Last start, the Snippetson gelding came off a Class 1/Maiden win when he stepped-up to Class 3 company and repeated the dose, putting more than two lengths on them over the 1900m journey at Armidale. Today, he drops bac to BM58 company and after the claim, carries even less weight than that Class 3 win last start. Drawn the fence today, the scene looks set for a big performance at great each-way odds.
Race 5 - 3:40PM SOMERTON COMMUNITY CLASS 1 HANDICAP (1250 METRES)
Muswellbrook galloper RUNNING BEAR (best odds currently $5 with Palmerbet) comes off four-straight minor placings here and looks well placed in this contest to end the drought and take this out today. Last start, the Your Song mare looked home for all money until she was grabbed on the post by Silver City, beaten a whisker that day in a Class 1 over 1280m at Muswellbrook. She ran that out, 6.5 lengths slower than benchmark, a new personal best for her and the best in this field. She makes her track debut today and has Ash Morgan aboard for the first time. From gate six, she maps to settle in the first half-dozen (just behind the early pace). Five starts into this preparation now, she will be at her peak and looks a solid winning chance in this contest.
Race 7 - 4:55PM THANK YOU MR ROB VICKERY BENCHMARK 58 HANDICAP (1000 METRES)
The Scott Singleton-trained ONE PENNY (best odds currently $3.70 with Palmerbet) makes her track debut today and fresh off a 19-week break, looks well placed to give this a real shake. Last start, the Your Song filly ended her last campaign finishing fifth in a Class 3 at Tamworth where the Good 3 track didn’t suit. She covered the trip, 3.3 lengths slower than benchmark, still the best in this line-up by more than 3 lengths. She finished second in a recent Scone trial which has her prepared for today’s contest. Both career wins have come on Soft tracks and she is a two-time winner over the distance. Already a winner when first-up, Rachael Murray has the reins today and from gate five, she should be in the thick of it all the way to the line.
