  • Bold Star can make his presence felt
Bold Star

A field of just six gallopers line up in Saturday’s Kensington Stakes (1000m) at Flemington but the $140,000 Listed race shapes as a beauty.

The feature of the day has been taken out by some handy types in the past and last year it was Belwazi that upset the likes of Glenall, Champagne Cuddles and Missrock.

This year’s edition sees All Too Royal vying with Time To Reign for favouritism in early markets with sportsbet. That pair have been installed at $3.10, while the Adelaide galloper, Bold Star, is at $4.20.

Sartorial Splendour is at $7 ahead of My Pendant at $8.50 while Causeway Girl is the outsider of the field at $26.

Of the field of six, Bold Star shapes as the one for mine. He has had three runs this preparation and arrived just on time to win when resuming in a 955m scamper at Moonee Valley back on November 22, before tackling the 1000m at Flemington, charging home to defeat the likes of Esperance and Propelle.

He then proved that he can mix it in strong class by finishing runner-up to Halvorsen in the Group 3 Standish Handicap (1200m) on New Years Day. The winner out of that has won his past three and is absolutely flying.

In the Standish, the four-year-old went it alone on the outside rail and closed off very well before missing out by a length. In his win at headquarters prior to that, he settled last in a 10-horse field and rocketed home.

On Saturday, he is likely to again stalk his rivals and will be ridden by Dwatne Dunn, who may opt to see what unfolds in front of him in the early stages.

Sartorial Splendour is likely to lead them up, while the favoured pair in All Too Royal and Time To Reign might tuck in just behind him.

All Too Royal is a last start winner over the 1200m at Caulfield in the Christmas Stakes (1200m) but I am not fully convinced about his overall form at this level, while there are question marks on Time To Reign, who has been out of action for almost a year.

Of the other hopes, Sartorial Splendour can be dangerous if allowed to dictate, while My Pendant will be better over further.

Bold Star raced exclusively in Adelaide last year and has had the 16 starts for six wins. He has raced nine times over the distance for four victories, but it is his recent form that stands out. He worked through the grades late last year and has won three of his past four at the trip.

His only ‘failure’ came when he was held up badly at Listed level at Morphettville when running 6th in the Lightning Stakes (1050m). Look for him to add to his impressive recent record.
