Below is our guide to the best chances at Mackay today:
Race 2 - 1:10PM BOOK FUNCTIONS AT THE MTC BENCHMARK 70 Handicap (1560 METRES)
Rockhampton galloper SCHAPPOSE (best odds currently $2.70 with Palmerbet) is no stranger to Mackay and looks well placed here to bring up win number three on the track today. Last start, the High Chaparral gelding was shooting for the hat-trick but had to settle for second prize in a Class 6, here over 1560m. He suffered hoof lacerations that day but still managed to run his last 600m, 3.2 lengths quicker than benchmark, the best here by more than 6 lengths. Ryan Wiggins jumps aboard for the first time today as the seven-year-old maps to settle just behind the speed. With a trouble-free run home, he looks hard to hold out in this contest.
Race 6 - 3:35PM SKY RACING BENCHMARK 70 Handicap (1100 METRES)
Bowen trainer Andrew Cameron saddles-up EXACTAMENTE here (best odds currently $7.50 with Palmerbet) and making his track debut today, looks a solid each-way chance in this company. Last start, the Per Incanto gelding finished third in a Class 6 event at Townsville over 1000m. He ran that out, 3.1 lengths slower than benchmark, still the best in this field by 3 lengths. Ryan Wiggins has been booked for this ride as well and from gate five, maps to settle on speed. He is a three-time winner over the 1100m and if the pace is on, he should give us a good run for our money at odds today.
Race 7 - 4:10PM RACING AGAIN SAT 28TH MAY Class 2 Handicap (1100 METRES)
The Trevor Williams-trained STARHATTAN (best odds currently $4.20 with bet365) is shooting for the hat-trick today and on debut here, looks well placed to pull it off. Last start, the Star Witness filly destroyed a Class 1 field over the 1050m sprint at Rockhampton. Coming from last on the turn, she showed an incredible turn-of-foot and weaved her way through traffic to take over inside the final 200m and put three lengths on them over the line. Scott Sheargold rode her to victory at Home Hill two starts back and returns for today’s assignment. She has drawn wide (in gate 14) but is a known back-marker and will drop back early anyway. Mackay is a tight-turning track so she will need a touch of luck in the big field but if she finds clean air, watch for her barn-storming finish today.
