Michael Kent Jnr’s Caulfield Cup Day Preview

Michael Kent Jnr's Caulfield Cup Day

Co-trainer Michael Kent Jnr has partnered with racingbase.com.au for the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival and will be providing weekly previews of the stable’s runners.

After steering readers into multiple winners on Turnbull Stakes Day and Caulfield Guineas Day, Kent has again given us an honest assessment of the stable’s Caulfield Cup Day contenders.

The Price Kent Racing team has a total of five horses lining up at Caulfield on Cup Day, and you can get the inside word on each runner below:

Michael Kent Jnr’s Stable Preview for Caulfield Cup Day

Race 3 – CORKSCREW – 1:25PM Polytrack Gothic Stakes (1400 METRES)

“He is a progressive type but is coming through a weakish maiden.
We’re throwing him in the deep end here.
It’s hard to see him winning, but if he handles the potentially soft track, then he can fill a place.”

Race 4 – DAISIES – 2:00PM Schweppes Ethereal Stakes (2000 METRES)

“She ran the sixth fastest last 200m of the whole meeting last start.
She just keeps drawing wide which is making it tough for her.
Stepping up to 2000m, we may try to have her more forward.
She’s going really well at home, we still think she is a black-type filly, but we are mindful that she’s doing all of this in her first ever racing preparation.
All going well she will head to the Oaks after this.”

Race 5 – GUNSTOCK – 2:35PM Neds Classic (2000 METRES)

“He is our best bet on the card.
He spotted the winner seven-lengths, and it was hard to make up a lot of ground.
We know the family responds really well to the blinkers, so we put them on for his work on Tuesday morning and Jye McNeil said he worked really nicely with them on.”

Race 5 – TIZ MAGIC – 2:35PM Neds Classic (2000 METRES)

“We mentioned before last start that he was working really well and could run a race.
His work has continued to improve and he came through his Tuesday morning gallop with flying colours.
We expect more natural improvement and that makes the price discrepancy between him and Gunstock a little unfair.
He’s definitely over the odds and an each-way bet for those that like him.
All going well he will go to the VRC Derby with Gunstock.

($7.50 with Sportsbet at time of publishing)

Race 8 – GARVOC – 4:30PM Carlton Draught Alinghi Stakes (1100 METRES)

“Tremendous first-up record of three victories from four starts.
This is a really tough assignment first-up.
Plenty of speed in the race, she can be slow away, so she is going to need plenty of luck.

($46.00 with Sportsbet at time of publishing)

Kent’s Best for Caulfield Cup Day

“Gunstock is our best bet on the program. If you’re wanting something juicier than the $3.20 available, he is $8 to win the VRC Derby. You’d suggest an impressive win on the weekend would see that price tighten up, so he could be worth a futures bet.”
