Here are our Penola tips for today:
Race 5 - 1:55PM Royal Oak Hotel Penola Benchmark 54 Handicap (1400 METRES)
We jotted down Canidae into the #SACountryBlackbookers file as one to follow out of the race won by VIVALDI’S QUEST (Best Odds Currently $5 with Bet365). One the notes we made from that race at Balaklava was that we do expect that form to stand up. Both the winner Vivaldi’s Quest and the runner-up Headphones look set to go on with it from there. Vivaldi’s Quest also just missed over 1300 metres here at his start prior. Had settled back of midfield to dive between horses late and the step to 1400 metres looks ideal. Has run well both times he’s been here and we’ll look for Kayla Crowther to find some cover off the wide draw.
Race 8 - 3:55PM DiGiorgio Family Wines Penola Cup (6th Leg Limestone Coast Cup Series) (1700 METRES)
The Sue & Jason Jaensch team are back to defend their 2021 Penola Cup win CUBAN TOONITE (Best Odds Currently $7.50 with PlayUP). Ben Price guided the track and distance specialist home that day and has also won the major lead-up, The Coonawarra Cup on him since. Carried a similar weight that day as Price settled Cuban Toonite towards the back of midfield. In a carbon copy ride, the pair rounded the field up on turning to hit the front on entering the straight. Can run well again in the smallish field on the good deck and Cuban Toonite looms as the each-way special of the day.
Race 9 - 4:35PM Coopers Brewery Benchmark 68 Handicap (Heat 5 Autumn Series) (1300 METRES)
Stuart Padman often enjoys success in taking in his horses to Penola. He brings #SABlackbookers horse RIALTOR (Best Odds Currently $3.50 with PlayUp) who is already a track and distance winner. Tends to like bowling along out in front and shouldn’t find too many dramas in filling that role here. Finds his favored firmer surface too and gets in 1kg lighter for his win this class here in January. This benchmark 68 field does not appear to be any stronger than those he met and disposed off on that occasion. He has impressed us since as a city winner and the placement here from Padman must be respected.
