Thursday Track Specialists April 23

Thursday Track Specialist pinpoints the best jockeys & trainers to follow at each Australian racecourse in our Thursday track specialist report.

The old adage of ‘horses for courses’ can also be applied to jockeys that excel at certain tracks, and trainers with a home ground advantage.

We pinpoint the best racecourse jockeys and trainers in our daily track specialists report.

Results based on trainer and jockey strike rates and Return On Investment (ROI) for punters throughout the 2019-2020 season.

John Allen and Luke Nolen are the most dominant riders at Kilmore but neither are riding at Thursday’s meeting.

LEON & TROY CORSTENS have been smashing it out of the park at Kilmore with seven winners and two placegetters from 10 starters at Kilmore this season. With only one horse missing the Place and a 70% Win rate, they have returned a +118% ROI for punters. The duo has two runners engaged on Thursday.

MITCHELL FREEDMAN has only saddled up two runners at Kilmore this season, but both were winners giving punters a +145% ROI. Freedman has one runner in at Kilmore.

DANIEL STACKHOUSE has ridden more horses (68) at Pakenham than any other jockey this season, and with 13 winners and eight placegetters, he’s returned a +44% ROI. Stackhouse has three rides on Thursday night.

Mick Kent, Matt Cumani, Andrew Noblet and ENVER JUSUFOVIC have strong win and ROI stats, but only Jusufovic has a runner on Thursday. Jusufovic has saddled up 16 runners for four winners and seven placegetters and returned a +141% ROI for punters. Three of his last four winners have come at Pakenham and the other was on the Pakenham Synthetic.

Aaron Bullock is a clear standout among the Newcastle jockey ranks with the highest Win and Place rates as well as ROI, however, he has no rides on Thursday. No other jockeys with commanding stats to follow.

Two trainers with very similar figures for Newcastle are JAMES CUMMINGS & JOHN O’SHEA. They have a 23% and 25% winning strike rate respectively, and both have returned +13 ROI this season.

STEPHEN WILSON has the best winning strike (22.5%) rate of any hoop at Townsville this season with nine winners and 11 placegetters from 40 rides. He is also the only jockey with a significant number of rides to have a positive ROI having returned +46%. His last seven wins at the track have been on horses at $1.80 to $6.50 in the market, and with a full book of rides on Thursday, it may pay to focus on Wilson’s mounts in this price range.

BILL KENNING doesn’t have a really strong ROI but it is positive at +12%. However, his winning strike rate of 44% and Place rate of 72% has seen him record eight winners and five placegetters from 18 runners. Kenning’s star performer Star Banner resumes from a spell and is his only runner for the day. Star Banner is yet to Win or Place first or second-up and may be in need of the run. However, Chris Whiteley has ridden him four times for as many wins and jumps aboard first-up – winning combo could be an indicator.

William Pike has the best Win (33%) and Place (60%) rate but a negative ROI. JOSEPH AZZOPARDI’s strike rate is next best at Bunbury, but unlike Pike, Azzopardi has a positive ROI having returned +57%.

Two trainers to follow at Bunbury with MICHAEL LANE and Jason Pateman having strong winning strike rates and ROIs. Lane has more winners than any other trainer at Bunbury this season with 15 winners and 10 placegetters coming from 45 runners. His ROI is very healthy at +98%. Pateman has only saddled up 13 runners at Bunbury for the season but has landed five winners, however, he has no runners engaged on Thursday.
