Victorian Racing Tips January 12

  • Patrick Payne could be celebrating victory at two different tracks today
VIC racing Sunday at Sale & Benalla

Race 5 – 3:20PM Sanlam Private Wealth BM64 Handicap (1740 METRES)
Having his fourth start this preparation, TEARS TO GLORY is yet to miss a top-three finish and looks well-placed here to bring up win number three. First-up off a 10-week break, he showed no mercy on his fresh legs where he slipstreamed the leaders to the turn, then threaded his way through a gap to collar them passing the 200m mark and that was all she wrote. He then finished third at Echuca as a hot $2 favourite and then last start, finished third again with Ben Allen aboard in a BM64 at Mornington over the shorter 1500m trip. He steps up in distance here which I believe will suit him better, and we see Brad Rawiller return to the saddle today. He is drawn out a little but it shouldn’t come into play in the eight-horse field. At peak fitness, he’s the benchmark here.

Race 2 – 1:45PM Bertoli Farm Machinery Maiden Plate (1406 METRES)
Yet to miss a top-three finish after four career starts, the Patrick Payne-trained ECHO BOOMER looks ideally placed here to break her maiden status today. Fresh off a lengthy six-month stint in the paddock, she finished strongly to grab second prize in a Warrnambool maiden over 1100m. Following that, the Duporth filly had to settle for second best again when beaten home by The First Of May over 1200m at Kyneton. Last start, her first look at 1400m saw her out as she finished third (beaten two lengths) behind Fine Rhythm in a Maiden Plate at Werribee. Harry Coffey jumps aboard today for his first ride on the three-year-old and after scratchings comes in closer at the starting gates and will jump from barrier eight (of ten). She should settle back in the field anyway so a wide gate is not a concern here. She comes in on the limit with 55kgs and should be there again at the finish.
