Here are our Wagga Wagga tips for today.
Race 1 - 2:10PM COTTONTAILS RESTAURANT & WINERY BENCHMARK 74 HANDICAP (1400 METRES)
Wangaratta galloper MESCAMINTO (best odds $3.20 with bet365) is second-up here and ticks enough boxes to suggest she is a winning chance today. Last start, the Kermadec mare came off a 12-week spell and lined-up in a BM70 over 1300m at Wodonga. On a Heavy 10 that day, she settled just behind the leaders and on fresh legs, battled on gamely to collect third prize. She ran her last 600m, 1.5 lengths quicker than benchmark, the best in this field, and posted the fastest final 600m sectional for the event. Ideally drawn in gate three today, she maps to settle right behind the pace again. Already a winner when second-up, fitter here she will take beating today.
Race 2 - 2:45PM GOOD LUCK GRACE CROWLEY BENCHMARK 66 HCP- HEAT OF THE WAGGA STAYERS SERIES (1800 METRES)
Four podium finishes from his past five starts puts the locally-trained PILLAR OF STRENGTH (best odds $6.50 with Sportsbet) right in this contest today. Last start, the Top Echelon gelding came from well back to grab victory in a BM66, here over 2000m. He set a new personal best that day, running the journey, 1 length slower than benchmark, also the best in this field. He also recorded the fastest final 600m, 400m and 200m sectionals for the race. From gate two, he maps to settle in the first four and already a two-time winner on his home track, he is a genuine winning chance today.
Race 6 - 5:10PM WAGGA RSL CLUB MAIDEN PLATE (1300 METRES)
It’s each-way all day here with (currently) $5 the field on offer today. The Chris Heywood-trained PERFECT SUN (best odds $6 with Sportsbet) is third-up on her home track and looks right in the mix in this company. Last start, the Fighting Sun mare improved sharply when second-up where she beat all but one home, here in a 1200m Maiden. On a Heavy 10 that day, she settled just behind the pace and finished well but was unable to reel-in the leader, beaten half a length on the line. She ran the trip, 9.3 lengths slower than benchmark, the second-best effort here. Ideally drawn in three today, she maps to box-seat and fitter for two runs back, looks a solid winning chance here.
