Hong Kong Sprint Tips – Size confident Hot King Prawn can overcome wide gate

  • Hot King Prawn draws wide for the Group One Sprint
  • Size confident he can overcome it

Race favourite Hot King Prawn has drawn gate 11 (of 12) for the HK$20 Million Group One Longines Hong Kong Sprint (1200m) on Sunday.
Trainer John Size believes Hot King Prawn has enough early gate speed to overcome his wide draw in Sunday’s big sprint race and if we look at his recent results, the evidence supports this.
At his last start, prior to the Hong Kong break, he put more than two lengths on his opposition in a class 2 at Happy Valley which had plenty of form experts taking notes.
Then, resuming from a four-month spell, he showed amazing speed and fight to hold off Ivictory over the shorter 1000m trip in his first-up run.
Then second-up, he drew gate seven of ten and was even more impressive in winning the Group Two Premier Bowl where he put more than a length on Fifty Fifty and Mr Stunning as he covered the 1200m trip in a blistering 1:08.2.
Then just to show that was no fluke, he drew even wider last start, and jumping from barrier eight (of nine), he quickly took up the front running, crossing in front of Fifty Fifty and Mr Stunning.
Joao (Magic Man) Moreira then took control of the race by slowing the field down and dictating the pace.
In the run home, he found another gear and made sure nothing was going to run him down, holding off spirited challenges from Mr Stunning and Beat The Clock with another lightning fast time of 1:08.5 which was always going to win the event.
I see his stablemates as the biggest threats here and it is very possible that John Size could end up filling the trifecta.
Both Mr Stunning and Beat The Clock are as honest as the day is long with both horses not missing a top three finish from their past eight starts.
The fourth representative from the John Size stable is Ivictory who could be the dark horse here.
He is a lot better than his last two runs suggest and with three runs behind him this preparation, I believe you will see a much improved performance from the Group One winning Mossman gelding.
On current form, it’s hard to go past Hot King Prawn, a winner of his past four starts and running quick times.
Moreira rode him an absolute treat last start where he came from a wide gate and still won.
I see no reason why he can’t repeat that effort here.
