Expressway Stakes Tips – class mare to strike first-up
Expressway Stakes Tips and Preview 2020
Saturday’s Group 2 Expressway Stakes (1200m) at Randwick will see the return of a couple of high-class autumn contenders – and I think they can fight out the finish.
Alizee is the highest rated horse in the field of 10 with a handicap rating of 115, and she’s closely followed by Kolding who carries a rating of 114.
Over 1400m to 1600m with fitness on their sides, I’d prefer to be with Kolding this campaign, but first-up over 1200m at Randwick, Alizee can claim first blood.
The James Cummings-trained daughter of Sepoy has won four of five first-up attempts with her only failure being on debut.
She won the Xmas Classic (1200m) first-up last autumn and then took out the Expressway Stakes at Rosehill Gardens a month later after a quick let-up.
Those races rated 6.0 and 8.5 lengths quicker than standard BM, and that first-up figure puts her above what Saturday’s opposition have been able to do at their respective stages of their preparations.
Kolding for instance went 6.9 lengths better than BM first-up last campaign, but that was over 1400m and his previous four efforts over 1200m to 1300m have rated 5.8 lengths slower than BM to 3.5 lengths quicker than BM when fit.
His first barrier trial was very impressive, but I’m not sure what to make of his most recent effort.
He was under more pressure than the leaders and failed to make an impact, but I think he’s just looking for longer which is why I’m willing to risk him over the sharp 1200m trip.
Alizee put in her standard trial effort and was trucking behind them and hitting the line nicely and continued to pass runners after the line.
She had White Moss covered late and that galloper improves significantly second-up so I’m also happy to risk her.
The speed of this event should also suit Alizee and Kolding as we have Kiamichi, Irithea and Special Reward likely to pour on the early speed while White Moss and Vegadaze also have pace and will make that trio work.
This should set it up for a swooper, and Alizee looks perfectly placed three of four pairs back.
Her turn of foot is very sharp first-up, and with the right cart into the race, she can finish best to score from Kolding.
