Big Bets Post Mortem

Bookies got the better of proceedings on the weekend courtesy of the two best backed runners both missing a top-three finish.

At Randwick, the big bets were off to a good start with the well-backed GOD OF THUNDER grabbing victory right on the line in an exciting three-way finish from Miss Exfactor and Royal Witness.

One big bet punter was happy with the result after having $1,500 @ $3 on the Team Hawkes gelding, while the TAB reporting taking some late bets of $2,000 @ $2.50 (twice) and another investment of $8,000 @ $2.40.

Another big bet punter suffered the anguish that racing can sometimes bring with a big bet of $5,000 @ $10 on the second placed MISS EXFACTOR falling agonisingly short of a major collect on the race.

Along came the Light Fingers Stakes with the best backed runner of the day (at Randwick) LIBERTINI in action. Sadly for those who took the short odds, the Anthony Cummings-trained filly had to settle for fourth prize as the Godolphin trio filled the trifecta in the Group Two event.

Big bets totalling $18,000 were placed on the three-year-old with the TAB reporting investments of $3,000 @ $2 and several bets of $2,000 @ $1.85.

Overall, punters tended to go the wrong way in the Apollo Stakes with DREAMFORCE gaining the most support, however he had to settle for second prize after another Godolphin stable runner, Alizee, bobbed up along the fence to steal the show from the Fastnet Rock gelding.

One punter had $2,000 @ $4 on the John Thompson-trained gelding while the TAB reported taking several other big bets including $5,000 @ $2.70, $2,100 @ $2.70, and $2,000 @ $2.70 (several times).

Meanwhile further south the situation was just as painful at Flemington for some punters. Just three of the nine favourites on the day were successful, making life a little hard for some.

The first of the feature races was the Group Three CS Hayes Stakes and racegoers were treated to finish, well worth the admission price alone. As expected, the top two in the market settled down to fight it out, but the battle was more than that, with both horses matching strides over the final 300 metres.

The majority of punters ended up on the right side of the fence, (slightly) favouring ALLIGATOR BLOOD to beat his NZ competitor CATALYST to the line, and that he did, by a whisker.

Alligator Blood (inside) holds out Catalyst in the CS Hayes Stakes

Big bets totalling more than $13,000 were riding with ‘the Alligator’ with the TAB taking several more big bets on the QLD-based gelding including $3,000 @ $2, $2,500 @ $2, $2,000 @ $2, $2,000 @ $1.90 (several times) , $4,000 @ $1.80 and $3,000 @ $1.80.

Catalyst had his own supporters with one big bet of $5,000 @ $3.20 taken plus TAB investments of $8,080 @ $3, $1,500 @ $3 (twice), $1,400 @ $3 and $1,000 @ $3 several times as well.

After that exciting finish, we could see equal favourites for the Australian Guineas in a fortnight’s time. * Currently, Catalyst is $3.20 just ahead of Alligator Blood at $3.40 with Sportsbet.

Then cam the big one, the Group One Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (1000m) and in a seven-horse field, most punters ended up with jaws dropped as the $1.45 favourite NATURE STRIP missed a top-three finish.

Big Bets totalling more than $25,000 (including one single bet of $10,000 @ $1.50) went tumbling down as the Chris Waller-trained gelding finished a well-beaten fourth in the race.

The TAB took their fair share of money on the Nicconi gelding as well including bets of $4,500 @ $1.50, $2,000 @ $1.50 (several times), $8,000 @ $1.45, $6,665 @ $1.45 and $3,000 @ $1.45 (several times).
