Clint Johnston-Porter Previews Winterbottom Stakes Day

Leading Western Australian jockey Clint Johnston-Porter has partnered with racingbase.com.au for the Perth Summer Carnival and will give readers insight into his Saturday rides.

Johnston-Porter has eight rides on Winterbottom Stakes Day at Ascot, including Stageman in the Group 1 feature.

Check out Johnston-Porter’s assessment of each of his rides below:

Race 1 – BOPPING BLUE – 12:05PM TOURISM WA TROPHY (1000 METRES)

“First time I hop on this guy under trial or race conditions. He showed speed again first-up and just tired over the concluding stages. There’s a lot of speed in this race so the first 100m will be crucial to see whether I lead or camp just behind some of the other speedy types in this race.”

Race 2 – SUPERIOR SMILE – 12:45PM MRS MAC’S HANDICAP (1600 METRES)

“Also my first-ride on this guy.
He’s a consistent type that has shown his class in Listed company for the last couple of years.
He was well beaten first-up, but any extra distance like he gets here suits him. Hopefully he improves and I can stay on him as he gets out to 2000m plus.”

Race 3 – TRIPLE MISSILE – 1:25PM DRUMMOND GOLF HANDICAP (1200 METRES)

“I’m pretty excited to have picked up this ride.
If he gets into the Winterbottom Stakes (Emergency 1) then I would think he’d be the fourth or fifth favourite, so it’s a great opportunity for me in a benchmark 78+.
The small field suits him and there’s enough speed in the race to suggest we will get the last crack at them.
He should be hard to beat and is my best of the day.”

Race 4 – SNIPPY MISS 2:05PM TABTOUCH WESTSPEED PLATINUM SERIES FINAL (1400 METRES)

“She wasn’t suited last start with the breakaway leader.
This race should be run with a more suitable pattern.
She hasn’t won in a while, but she’s always consistent and tries her hardest.”

Race 5 – TRI FOR US 2:45PM CROWN TOWERS HANDICAP (1400 METRES)

“I rode this filly on debut, and it was a very wet track at Pinjarra and she only just lost. Chris Parnham got on next start and he was able to win three of her next four. She got black-type by finishing third in the Belmont Guineas and Belmont Oaks.
She was scratched last week after drawing wide, but it’s a great opportunity for me to get on a classy filly like this for my number one supporter Adam Durrant.”

Race 7 – DIG DEEP 4:05PM JAPAN RACING ASSOCIATION TROPHY (2100 METRES)

“I’m happy to get back on this guy after riding him two starts ago.
I won the Listed Grandstand Cup on him earlier this year and he showed me a really nice turn of foot then.
Backing up from the Railway Stakes, I think we will learn a bit about him in this race. It is the furthest he’s ever raced over, he has the top weight and a sticky draw, but I am confident in his ability, and I think we can stalk the favourite.”

Race 8 – STAGEMAN – 4:45PM CROWN PERTH-WINTERBOTTOM STAKES (1200 METRES)

“Another great opportunity for me to win my first Group 1.
Any time you get to ride the cerise and white in a big race it is an honour.
Stageman is a horse that not everyone gets along with, but he and I do seem to click.
I think he’s been really unlucky in the lead up events and probably hasn’t got to show how good he is really going.
The barrier draw wasn’t ideal, but we’ve seen in this race that the winners can come from a wide draw, I’ll be giving it my all.”

Race 9 – BERET – 5:20PM HEINEKEN 3 HANDICAP (1400 METRES)

“We might have found something out by accident last start.
She had been finishing her races off really well without a victory until last start when we were forced to lead. I got it easy out in front and she still finished off strongly.
There’s a few in this race that will want to lead, so I’ll have plenty of options and with the form she’s in she should give a good sight again.
