Jockeys to Back & Sack – April Edition

in-form jockeys

With April racing done and dusted we look at which jockeys to back and sack heading into May.

As well as winning strike rate for any riders with sufficient rides in April, we highlight which jockeys are turning a profit for punters and returning a positive Return On Investment (ROI).

TOP 3 JOCKEYS TO BACK

SAMANTHA CLENTON (NSW) +48% ROI in April
The in-form Sam Clenton was clearly the jockey to follow through April having booted home 15 winners and nine placegetters from 51 rides. Her winning strike rate of 29.4% is just above Perth gun William Pike who had a success rate of 29.2% through April. However, unlike Pike followers who recorded a -33% Return On Investment (ROI), Clenton’s loyal fans reaped the rewards netting +48% ROI. Clenton has returned a positive ROI in five of the past seven months making her a jockey to trust. She’s off to a slow start in May with just one win and six placings from 15 rides, but she can turn that around and finish off strong.

DEAN YENDALL (VIC) +108% ROI in April
Yendall has been on fire in April having returned the best ROI for any of the top 50 riders in the country. Punters backing every Yendall ride would have made +108% ROI with Yendall notching up 11 winners and 13 placegetters from 46 rides giving him a 24% winning strike rate. It was a massive month for Yendall and he’s clearly in form, but this was his only positive ROI month in the past 12 months so it will be interesting to see if he goes on with it.

GREG RYAN (NSW) -4% ROI in April
Despite returning a slight loss for punters in April (-4% ROI), Ryan has the second-best Win-rate (31%) and best Place rate (63%) of any rider in the top 50. He’s saluted the judge first on 11 occasions and finished in the placings a further 11 times from a total of 35 rides. Ryan has produced a positive ROI in three of the past four months with April being his only blemish in that time. You won’t get rich backing Ryan, but his consistent results are better than bank interest.

3 JOCKEYS TO SACK

WILLIAM PIKE (WA) -30% ROI in April
Pike featured in our last edition of ‘The Sack & Back Files,’ and firmly holds his place in the ‘Sack’ category. However, unlike some who are just out of form, Pike’s only downside is his cult following that sees his mounts consistently go around under the odds. Pike had a great strike rate (29.2%) though April but loyal followers recorded a -30% ROI.

JYE MCNEIL (VIC) -54% ROI in April
Having been in-form though February and tapering off in March, McNeil hit a low in April with just 12 winners from 112 rides. His 10.7% win-rate is equally the lowest he has recorded within the past 12 months, and a -54% ROI makes McNeil a hoop to steer clear of for the time being.

JAMIE KAH (VIC) -66% ROI in April
The previously consistent J Kah has been struggling of late and has steered punters to a massive loss of -66% in April. Her winning strike rate through April is low at 10%, and more worrying is the fact she has gone worse in recent times with 8% win-rates through January 2020 and November 2019.
