Plunge landed: $91 into $9 for new trainer
Punters have landed a massive plunge at Stawell on Easter Sunday.
The Mark Pegus-trained four-year-old mare Costa Maya opened $91 at Sportsbet and was sent out at odds of $9. Ridden by Linda Meech, Costa Maya drew away from rivals late in the home straight to win by 2.25 lengths.
Costa Maya was having her first start for Pegus, a former Group 1-winning jockey who rode Shadoways to win the 2008 The Goodwood (1200m) at Morphettville.
The mare was previously trained by Terry and Karina O’Sullivan who received lengthy cobalt bans on April 8. She had not run a place from five starts prior to winning the Maiden Plate (1600m) at Stawell.
Pegus’ other runner for the day was another former O’Sullivans horse called Sentimentalist. The five-year-old gelding captured the Stawell Gold Cup (2000m) and was also ridden by Meech. He was dominant with a 3.5-length victory over Tre Dieci.
