Vanna Girl’s campaign at the crossroads

Carnival plans for classy mare Vanna Girl are in limbo after she jarred up in her Epsom Handicap “non-event”.

The remainder of the four-year-old’s Sydney program won’t be locked in until she is assessed in the coming days by the Toby and Trent Edmonds stable.

“She felt the track a bit and pulled up a little bit jarred up for a few days afterwards,” co-trainer Trent Edmonds said.

“We’ve treated her with a couple of quiet days, some swimming and some anti-inflammatories as well.”

Depending on how quickly she recovers, Vanna Girl may start in Saturday’s Group Three Craven Plate (2000m) at Randwick.

Another option being considered for the mare is the Rosehill Gold Cup (2000m) on October 31, the same day as the $7.5 million Golden Eagle (1500m).

Edmonds said Vanna Girl gave away an impossible start when finishing down the track behind Probabeel in the Epsom after racing in second last position most of the way.

“She got back in what was basically an uncompetitive position and it was mathematically impossible to win from there,” he said.

“Sectionally she was still quite good. They went along at a nice tempo but unfortunately for grand final day, it was largely a non-event.

“She gave away way too much start and that was that.”
