KYLA ($3.40 with Bet365) should be hard to beat in the opening event of the day at Ararat. The four-year-old has placed in three of eight and narrowly went down over the 1875m at Kyneton two starts ago. She looked the winner in that race before being swamped on the line by Kyiv Prince, while those two gapped the rest. At her most recent start she was tried in town, sticking on well to run 5th behind Tempest Charm at Sandown over the 1600m on January 3. She comes back to a country setting and heads into this fourth up. The step up to the 2000m should suit.

TRANQUIL BAY ($1.85 with Bet365) looks to be the one in Race 4 at Ararat. The Anthony & Sam Freedman-trained galloper is yet to win in seven starts but has placed in three and been close up in a number of others. The three-year-old resumed at Yarra Valley on December 17 and worked her way into it as they cornered before running on to fill the exacta behind Joseylin. The 4th placegetter out of that has since broken his maiden, while the winner was runner-up at Sandown last week. Tranquil Bay produced the fastest last 600m, 400m and 200m and went four lengths slower than standard, which is good for Maiden company and six lengths better than the next best last start figures of any runner in this race. She should have improvement to come and has drawn well in barrier 5.

QUEEN ZYRAH ($2.50 with Bet365) should find this easier than recent runs. The Symon Wilde-trained galloper drops down from BenchMark 64 and was a narrow 3rd in that grade at Moonee Valley over the 1200m two starts ago before racing at that venue on New Years Eve and running 7th to Cherrypick. She was never really in the hunt that night after drawing wide and settling back on what was a very slow early tempo. The four-year-old comes into this fourth up and was a winner ahead of the likes of Vistabelle and Awapuni Princess at Swan Hill over the 1300m at the same stage last time. She has drawn barrier 2 and will be ridden by Linda Meech, who strikes at 24% when combining with this stable.
