Fitter for two runs back this preparation, the Tony Newing-trained IN FIORE looks well-placed in this easier event and should take beating. The four-year-old resumed from a six-month spell in fine style, finishing third in a three-way go to the line on his home track at Gosford. He hit the line strongly, running the best final 800m sectional of the day. He then headed south-west to Wagga and lined up in a Class 3 over 1200m. He settled back in the field and was the widest runner on the turn and although finishing well, he gave the leaders too much start and had to settle for fifth place. He did, however, run the fastest 800m-200m sectional in the event. His resume shows very little when it comes to third-up runs, however, he has drawn the fence here and has done enough to date to be a real show as he drops down in grade today.
Trained at Muswellbrook by Todd Howlett, ROY’S COMMAND is LONG overdue for a change of luck, going winless this preparation after eight starts. His past two starts were both at Taree where he finished an agonising second on both occasions. Two starts back, the Commands gelding looked ideally-placed in BM58 company having drawn gate two for the event. There, he did everything right but get past the leader, finishing nosed-out by Shy One. Then last start, it was déjà vu all round, similar company, same trip (1600m), and same track. But this time he caught the leader and had the race at his mercy, only to be nailed on the line by one finishing along the fence (Eurogem) who grabbed him right on the post. It’s time for a break, and he looks well-placed here to make amends. The in-form Mikayla Weir returns to the saddle for her fourth ride on the five-year-old. He drops back slightly in distance here, who knows, maybe that, along with a chance of scenery will do the trick. It is his first look at the Armidale track but drawn well and at peak fitness, it can be his day today.
