SALTO ANGEL shapes as the one they have to beat in Race 4 of the day at Ballarat. The Danny O’Brien-trained filly has had seven career starts, finishing runner-up in four of those, including the VRC Oaks (2500m). She should find this much easier than her first up assignment that saw her finish 8th at Flemington behind Zou Dancer, who in the Australian Guineas (1600m) on Saturday. At her last campaign she produced a similar performance on debut before just missing out at Sandown over the 1600m in a Maiden. The daughter of Sacred Falls then improved six lengths on benchmark figures between her first and second runs to finish runner-up in a Maiden over the 1600m at Sandown before matching it with the big guns in the Ethereal Stakes (2000m) and the Oaks. A firmer in early betting, this shapes as an easy kill and she will be ridden by Damian Lane from barrier 7.

The final event of the day is a BenchMark 64 over the 1400m and BILLY MAV might be one to consider at the each-way quote. The Paul Preusker gelding came over from New Zealand in 2020 for a one start campaign that saw him finish a narrow runner-up at Geelong. The five-year-old settled in a midfield spot that day over the 1330m before just missing out behind Reine Happy. The form out of that race proved to be handy, while he went nearly six lengths faster than standard over the last 600m en route to going a tick faster than overall benchmark. Anything like that should hold up well here. The query is that it is his first run but he was fresh that day and he has been kept steady in the early betting.
