Race 6 – 1:05PM AQUIS QTIS Three-Years-Old BENCHMARK 62 Handicap (1400 METRES)
Seeing the Beaudesert track for the first time, BARNEY’S LAW brings good form to the track and will be hard to beat. First-up off a 21-week spell, he broke through for his maiden win at Warwick, putting two lengths on the field over the 1100m trip. Then last start, beat all but Vanna Girl home at the Gold Coast in the longer 1400m journey after trying to lead all the way. This looks a little easier for the Zoustar gelding as Luke Dittman jumps aboard for his first ride on the three-year-old. Drawn on the fence (after early scratchings), he should be able to dominate the race from there and prove hard to run down.
Race 11 – 4:20PM TAB BENCHMARK 60 Handicap (1400 METRES)
Four starts into this preparation and MISTER WARD looks ready to win. Third-up at the Gold Coast, he fought on strongly to be in a three-way go to the line, finishing third after the photo to Victory Dance and Tziporah in a BM65 over 1400m. Then last start, he took a BM68 and found the 1500m just a bit much, fading in the final 50 metres to end up mid-field, beaten just two lengths in the end. He comes back to the 1400m here, and drops in grade. With his good early gate speed, he maps to be box-seating and at peak fitness, he looks right in the mix and could give this a real shake at good odds.
