Murwillumbah trainer Matt Dunn crosses the border today with THE BIG EATER (best odds $4.40 with Neds) who drops sharply in grade and looks far better suited here. Last start, the Starcraft gelding came off a podium finish in a Class 3 at Ipswich when he hit the big town and took on similar company at Doomben over the mile. Sent out at $61, he settled last, a dozen lengths from the lead. On the turn he could see every runner and battled home, beaten five lengths on the line (only a neck from the $3.40 race favourite. He ran the trip, 1.9 lengths slower than benchmark, still 5 lengths quicker than this field. This is a huge drop in class as he returns to country racing today and with Robbie Fradd back aboard, he shapes up as a solid winning chance here.

Out of the money in five starts this preparation, the Kelly Schweida-trained MISS BARTY (best odds $4.60 with Sportsbet) is having her first start in country class this campaign and looks right in the mix. Last start, the Dawn Approach mare gave her all at Doomben but just couldn’t quite match it with the city gallopers that day, finishing fifth (of 11) on the line. She covered the 1110m trip, 3 lengths slower than benchmark, the second-best in this line-up. Brad Stewart takes the reins for the first time today as the four-year-old makes her Beaudesert debut. Scratched from last Saturday’s Gold Coast meeting to run in this easier contest, I expect her to be prominent throughout and to fight out the finish.

The Lee Freedman-trained LEADERSHIP SPILL (best odds $1.75 with Ladbrokes) looks the best of the day here and after a bag full of scratchings will go to the barriers a white-hot favourite. Last start, the Top Echelon gelding came off an impressive win, here in Class 4 company when he lined-up against a city Class 4 field over 1200m at Doomben. Trying to lead all the way, he looked the goods but found one just a little better on the day, grabbing him in the final fifty metres. He ran the trip, half a length quicker than benchmark, 6 lengths faster than his opposition here. Andrew Mallyon steered him to that victory here two starts back and returns today looking to repeat that effort. He maps to settle on-speed and may even lead again. Up in class but back to country racing, he looks the one to beat here.
