Benalla Tips – February 18
Race 5 – 3:30PM Ken King Thoroughbreds – RMBL Investments Rising Stars Race (1406 METRES)
KING MAGNUS steps out for his third career start and can atone for a narrow last start defeat that saw him run 3rd to Tall Lady at Kilmore. The four-year-old was an easy winner at Moe on debut back on January 22 and rose to BenchMark 64 level on February 6 but was luckless in the run. He settled in a midfield position in the field of 10 but was held up at a vital time of the straight before switching lanes and driving in the shadows to miss out in a blanket finish. The step up to the 1400m looks ideal and he should receive all the favours from barrier 2 this time around.
Race 7 – 4:30PM Bet365 Grand Handicap Sprint Exempt Race (1206 METRES)
This shapes as an interesting betting race and the first emergency, MATADOR, sneaks into the field. The three-year-old should find this grade much more suitable compared to some of his recent runs. After running a bottler at from the tail of the field at this level at Sandown over the 1300m, the Hayes/Dabernig galloper has been posted out wide at his past couple and was no match for the unbeaten How Romantic at Moonee Valley over the 1200m in the VOBIS Gold Carat last time. But he finds his class here and comes up against some of the older horses that have been whacking away in recent times. It will be interesting to see what his jockey, Lachlan King, does in the early stages after drawing barrier 10. He may opt to settle back in the field as most of his better performances have come when ridden cold and with luck in running he can go very close.
