Here are our Casino race tips for today.
The Stephen Lee-trained BONDURANT (Best Odds $5 with Bet365) is one of four under double figures here but with a good draw and sporting a major gear change, he looks the pick of bunch in this contest. Last start, the Contributor gelding returned to the city for another crack but again, missed the boat, finishing mid-field in a Three-Year-Old Hcp over 1845m at Eagle Farm. Trying to lead all the way, he just ran out of puff over the final 200m. He still ran the trip out, 1.2 lengths above benchmark, the best in this line up. Lee has dropped him back in distance today and will find this country competition a lot easier. He will also wear the blinkers for the first time and from gate five, maps to settle on speed. Four starts into this campaign, he will be rock-hard in fitness and should prove hard to run down.
Grafton galloper JULE’S SPIRIT (Best Odds $3.90 with Sportsbet) is back to make history today as he attempts to take out the Flying for the second-straight year. Last start, the Spirit Of Boom gelding was first-up off a lengthy six-month break when he took on a strong BM80 field over the 1000m at Eagle Farm. He was beaten a whisker on the line by the smart Tony Gollan galloper Pizonie. He ran his last 600m, 3.5 lengths quicker than benchmark, the second-best here behind Bugalugs who resumes today. He has drawn the outside gate today but does have good early gate speed, giving Ben Looker options at the start. Dropping sharply in grade here, if he can re-produce that first-up effort here, he will take a ton of beating today.
He didn’t set the world on fire first-up, but the Team Edmonds-trained POTRO DURO (Best Odds $3.40 with Bet365) will find this event a lot easier and is capable of tasting victory today. Last start, the All Too Hard gelding was resuming in a strong Class 6 field over 1200m at Eagle Farm where he was sent out a $101 chance, and ran accordingly. Finishing last of the nine runners, he still managed to run his last 600m, 9.5 lengths quicker than benchmark (the best here), and posted an overall effort, 0.2 of a length above the standard, the best in this field by 3 lengths. It is the Casino Cup but it will still be an easier assignment than his last city contest. He is a winner when second-up, and a three-time winner at the 1400m. After Zac Lloyd’s claim, he carries just 1kg over the limit at 56kgs and maps to be on speed from gate five. His resume shows five wins and as many minor placings from his 20 starts which suggests he has the ability to take the cup home today.
