Race 6 - 4:57PM CURLEY CATTLE TRANSPORT COUNTRY STAMPEDE QUALIFIER OPEN QUALITY Handicap (1000 METRES)
Best Value ?No. 7 MAGIC TOWN $7.50 Bet Now!
The Country Stampede Qualifier has brough some talented gallopers together and in a wide-open affair, I’m running with MAGIC TOWN who is unbeaten on the Cloncurry dirt track and has won four of his past five starts. After stringing a hat-trick of victories together, the Magnus gelding put in a shocker two starts back where he finished last of 11 in a Class 4 at Mt. Isa. He was spelled after that, but returned nine weeks later and had clearly overcome his problems. Resuming, he lined up in a BM60 over the 1000m sprint at Mt. Isa and gave his 9 rivals a galloping lesson, winning the event by more than five lengths. He is stepping up in grade today but will carry a huge 7kgs less than that last-start win. It’s a real family affair with this galloper, having Denise Ballard as trainer, and (regular) rider, son Dan Ballard usually at the helm. Today, however, it’s Denise’s husband Keith, who is in the saddle for his second ride on the six-year-old. He will have to overcome the wide draw (gate 9) but will be riding an in-form horse who is right in the mix here.
Race 7 - 5:30PM COUNTRY CUPS CHALLENGE QUALIFIER/WESTERN TRUCK GROUP CLONCURRY CUP OPEN Handicap (1600 METRES)
Best Bet ?No. 4 SNIPPY STRATEGIC $6.50 Bet Now!
The feature race of the day also sees several winning chances and among them is the Julia Creek visitor, SNIPPY STRATEGIC who’s consistent form has seen him record seven top-three finishes in his past eight starts. The Strategic Maneuver galloper finished third in the Spring Cup at Mt. Isa two starts back before heading to Richmond (QLD) where he dropped sharply in grade but had to carry 63.5kgs to compensate for it. Only a small field contested the BM69 that day, but the seven-year-old ran a solid 1200m to win the race by half a length on the line. He returns to top-class racing here but drops 6kgs in weight. Jason Babarovich will be climbing aboard the gelding for the 27th time, having partnered him to seven of his eleven career wins. He is expected to settle on the pace and will take some catching today. Seven visits to Cloncurry have not ended in victory to date but he has four minor placings here and gets his chance to shake that monkey today.
