This could confuse anyone but here, Queanbeyan galloper, I CALL JUNEE HOME, races at Cootamundra today. Once you’ve absorb that, we can get down to looking at his chances in this event. The Delago Deluxe mare came off an 11-week break two starts back and did a fine job to finish third in a Canberra maiden over 1000m. The track was a Heavy 10 that day and the only place to be was the outside fence. The four-year-old appeared to have the race sewn-up but was collared in the final 100 metres, only beaten a length on the line. Then last start, she back home and on top of the ground again in a 12-horse maiden over the 1000m again. It still turned out to be déjà vu for her as she was grabbed in the final 100 metres, leaving her with the runner-up cheque. Mathew Cahill was aboard for those two races and remains in the saddle here. From a good draw in gate three, all going well, the maiden status ends today.

Only a small field will contest this year’s Cup but there is still plenty of interest in the race. I’m running with CONTAMINATED here and second-up today, I believe he will turn out fitter and get the job done. First-up off a lengthy six-month break, he wasn’t disgraced when finishing fifth in Open company at Kembla Grange. He hit the front passing the 300m mark but as expected, his condition gave out and they collared him in the run home. He should find this a little easier today and will be a lot fitter for that first-up run. Brendan Ward returns to the saddle where he has been for three of the six-year-old’s career wins. Already a winner when second-up, he has the fitness (while still fresh) to take the cup home today.
