The opener at Geelong is a Maiden over the 1200m and SUN SAMURAI can go close after a last start effort that saw him finish runner-up at Ballarat on April 11 over the 1200m. In that race, the four-year-old settled on the speed and stuck on well to land within a length of War General. At his start prior he was well beaten when 6th in a stronger maiden at Sandown. He heads into this third up and he boasts the best last start benchmark figures of any runner, while at his Sandown run he went just 0.6 lengths slower than standard. That is better than what any horse in this race has produced since the start of 2020. He won’t be too far away in the run from barrier 6 and with the extra fitness in the tank he can give this a shake

BURLEIGH BOY looks to be a solid player for the Danny O’Brien stable in Race 3 of the afternoon at Geelong. He takes on the fellow three-year-olds and showed promise last year in a couple of his runs with form around the likes of Cherry Tortoni. He was last seen in the Gold Ingot at Caulfield and worked hard to lead that day before tiring into 7th behind Flinders River. He did go more than three lengths faster than standard in that race, while in his other two runs he was 3.7 lengths slower when resuming and 2.4 lengths slower in the Cherry Tortoni race. Anything like that should measure up well against this lot, while he will be ridden by Johnny Allen, who has a healthy strike rate of 26% when combining with O’Brien.

Race 6 is a BenchMark 64 and DERIVE should find this easier than a last start effort that saw her finish 7th behind Agreeable over the 1400m at Caulfield on April 3. In that race, the daughter of Redoute’s Choice settled just outside the leader before sticking on in ok fashion to run 7th, beaten just over three lengths. She went 0.6 lengths faster than standard in that run, which are the best last start figures of any runner. At her start prior she just missed out after a wide run at Sandown in this grade over the 1600m, going 4.2 lengths faster than standard. The step up to the 1700m looks like it should suit and with even luck in running from barrier 12 she can go close.

The final event of the day is another BenchMark 64, this time for the fillies and mares over the 1100m and ALLMYLIFE can go one spot better than a first up effort that saw her finish runner-up behind Quenton at Mornington on March 30 over the 1000m. That came at BM58 level and she rises in grade for this but she went 1.2 lengths slower than standard, which are the best last start figures of any runner. At her last campaign she improved seven lengths on figures between her fist and second runs when going from a 5th at Donald over the 1000m to finish runner-up over the 1200m at Kyneton before going on to take out her Maiden. Laura Lafferty sticks on board and claims the 1.5kg.
