This lot could run around six weeks straight and you would have a different winner each time. I’m running with the Pete Cullen-trained BUSTER BLOCK today. He finished his last preparation by running in the Townsville Cup where he had no luck from barrier rise. Bumped and jostled from pillar to post, he was carted right off the track on the turn out of the straight and that put paid to his chances. He still finished strongly to get within 2.5 lengths of the winner. Last start, he got right out of his ground in an Open Hcp at Townsville where he was second-up that day. Again he hit the line hard but found the 1200m too short. Today, he steps up to a more suitable trip and his third-up record precedes him, with two wins from four third-up runs. Cullen has made a jockey change here and will leg-up Scotty Sheargold who is no slouch in the saddle. If he can settle somewhere near mid-field, he will close enough to give this a real shake in the run home.
The Janel Ryan-trained BERAHT has been a true model of consistency and deserves to be put on top in this contest. Two starts back, the Charge Forward gelding tried to lead all the way over 1200m at Townsville but was grabbed late by two swoopers. Then last start, he faced similar company, again at the Cluden Park track, only this time over the shorter 1000m sprint. It was déjà vu for the six-year-old as he looked the winner until Beau Jet nailed him right on the line. Despite going down, he ran his last 600m four lengths above benchmark which is a good effort for a front runner. Ryan Wiggins makes the trip up from Brisbane today for his fourth ride on the gelding and he is yet to miss a podium finish. Ideally drawn in gate four, he will take catching again.
