Here are our Kempsey tips for today:
Jenny Graham saddles-up LORD AVATAR here (best odds $3.50 with Sportsbet) who ticks enough boxes here to be a genuine contender today. Last start, the Poet’s Voice gelding was second-up after almost a year off the scene when he finished a gallant third (of 12) in a BM66 over 1300m at Taree. He ran home solidly, covering his final 600m 3.2 lengths quicker than benchmark, more than 4 lengths faster than this field. He is drawn out today but with his early gate speed, maps to cross and settle near mid-field. Ashley Morgan sticks with him after steering him to podium finishes at his last two starts. He is a winner at his only previous start at the track and third-up, he boasts two wins and a minor placing from three previous third-up runs. Fitter today, he will take beating.
Canberra visitor LOLITA GOLD (best odds $6.50 with Sportsbet) is in search of another Cup victory here and looks well placed to take this one home as well. Last start, the Zoffany mare came off a podium finish in the Parkes Cup (1600m) when she tackled the Wingham Cup at Taree. She drew the outside gate (11) that day, forcing Chad Lever to push forward and take up the front-running. She did a mighty job to hold that field at bay and go on to claim victory on the line. Despite the early work, she still ran her final 600m, 5.7 lengths quicker than benchmark, the best here and posted the fastest final 600m sectional for the race. Today, Ben Looker is aboard for the first time and she draws better and maps to settle behind the early pace, with cover. In great touch this preparation, she should be rock-hard fit after four starts back and looks a solid each-way chance here.
Newcastle galloper MR POLAR (best odds $2.90 with Sportsbet) is fresh off a 15-week break here but brings first class from his last preparation that puts him in good steed here. Last start, he ended his previous campaign with back-to-back victories on his home track. His last effort saw him step up to BM78 company over the 900m sprint where Winona Costin rode him a treat and steered him to victory that day. He ran the trip out, 1.7 lengths slower than benchmark, still the second-best here. The Polarmore gelding sees the Kempsey track for the first time today on fresh legs but has won and placed when first-up in the past. Dylan Gibbons is in the saddle for the first time and after his claim, the four-year-old carries a reasonable 59.5kgs. Drawn nicely in gate seven, he maps to settle in the first half-dozen and should pose a real threat in the run home.
