The Michael Nolan-trained PUCKISH (best odds $2.60 with Ladbrokes) is three starts into this preparation and with a love for racing here, he looks the testing material today. Last start, he was third-up off an 18-week spell when he lined up here in a BM58 over 1900m. Settling mid-field, jockey Baylee Nothdurft decided to make his move early and took off passing the 600m mark. It proved a master stroke as he caught the rest of the field off the bit and went on to big win. In a slowly run affair, he covered the journey, 11.8 lengths slower than benchmark which still rates the best in this line-up. He also posted the fastest final 600m, 400m and 200m sectionals for the event. He meets similar company here again but steps up in distance where he is already a winner over the trip. A smaller field here should make the job even easier and with that in mind, he looks set to go back-to-back today.
Eagle Farm galloper ANNABETH (best odds $2.60 with Bet365) is four starts into this preparation and should now be fit enough to give this field something to catch today. Last start, the Spirit Of Boom mare hit the ground running and set a solid pace up front in a Class 1 over 1600m at the Sunshine Coast before weakening over the final 200m to take home second prize that day. She ran the trip, 6.7 lengths slower than benchmark overall but that effort still rates the best here by more than 5 lengths. Fitter for those four runs, trainer Paul Butterworth drops her back in distance here which looks ideal for her now. Maddie Wishart jumps aboard for the first time here and she is in good form, booting home the Jackie Crompton-trained Iced at Eagle Farm yesterday (our Racingbase.com.au tip at $10). Ideally drawn in gate three, She should take a ton of beating here.
The David Murphy-trained SHINSHINTO (best odds $4.60 with Palmerbet) has an impressive second-up record and only has to overcome a wide gate to be a real threat here. Last start, the Golden Archer gelding was resuming off a 15-week spell where he finished mid-field in an unsuitable 1000m event at the Sunshine Coast. He settled mid-field that day and couldn’t go the speed, but still held his ground to go down by only three lengths on the line. He ran the trip, 5 lengths slower than benchmark, still the best in this line-up here. The four-year-old steps up to a more suitable distance today and has Corey Bayliss remaining aboard (who has ridden the galloper to victory on two previous occasions). A two-time winner when second-up, if he can cross and settle early, he should be there at the finish.
