In the money at his past three starts, Victorian galloper MASTER KOSTYA (best odds $2.30 with bet365) looks well placed here to shake the maiden monkey off his back today. Last start, the Zoustar gelding came off a second-placed effort in an Albury Maiden when he faced easier company at Corowa. Sent out a $3.40 favourite, he had the race won everywhere except right on the line where he was nabbed by a couple of swoopers. Much better drawn today, he is partnered by Nick Heywood for the first time and from gate four, maps to settle up on the pace, with options available to Heywood. Now three starts into this campaign, he should be rock-hard fit and looks a genuine winning chance in this field.

Albury galloper SAINT HENRY (best odds $3.40 with Unibet) went 10 starts this preparation before finding the winning post first but now looks set to bring up another victory today. Last start, the Zariz gelding came off that win in Class 2 company at Albury when he dropped back to a BM58 on his home track at Wangaratta. Travelling wide most of the way, he did well to beat all but one home that day on a heavy track. He ran that trip out, 9 lengths slower than benchmark, but that still rates the best last start effort in this field. Brodie Loy returns for the ride and finishing in the minor money at his only previous ride on the six-year-old. Ideally drawn in gate two today, he maps to settle in the first half-dozen and on current form, he will take beating here.

Fresh off a 19-week break, Corowa galloper MAGNAVALE (best odds $4.80 with Sportsbet) ticks enough boxes here to be considered a real threat today. Last start, the Magnus mare came off a good win in the Town Plate Prelude (1200m) at Wagga with Hannah Williams on board when she made the trip to Flemington to end her last campaign in style. That day, she stepped-up sharply in grade and took on a BM84 over 1200m, down the Flemington straight track. Taking up the front running early, class soon told as she couldn’t hold them off and weakened out of it over the final 200m. She still ran the last 600m, 6.5 lengths quicker than benchmark, the best in this line-up by more than 3 lengths. She has the outside gate (9) to contend with today but has enough early gate speed to cross and settle on the speed. This is a huge drop in grade today, and she is reunited with winning rider Hannah Williams again who claims 2kgs here. Placed at her only start here previously, the seven-year-old is well-rested and is a first-up specialist, winning three of four previous first-up appearances. With a little luck from the wide draw, she will take beating here.
