Race 6 – 3:40PM LAWSON PARK HOTEL BENCHMARK 58 HANDICAP (1200 METRES)
Only one box un-ticked here for DEMONIZE but he can come through that unknown barrier he should prove hard to beat. The six-year-old has shown plenty of improvement lately and recent form suggests he’s up to this. Three starts back, he looked the winner at Dubbo but was grabbed on the line when finishing second in a BM58 over 1100m. Then next up, he stepped up to Class 3 company at Tamworth and after being slowly away, couldn’t make up the ground in the 1000m sprint, finishing fourth in the run home. Then last start, he bounced back at Narromine and was a surprise winner (at $41) as he rose sharply in grade and took on Open Class company. He has failed to fire in two of his past four starts, ironically with Greg Ryan aboard both times. Last start winning jockey (and regular rider), Kath Bell-Pitomac is back aboard here and should find a perfect sit from gate four. The only unknown here is the forecast Heavy 10 track. He has won in soft conditions but is untried on heavy ground. Taking on trust, he looks good value in a race like this.
Race 8 – 5:00PM HAPPY EASTER BENCHMARK 66 HANDICAP (1400 METRES)
One to finish off the meeting here is the Brett Thompson-trained NORTHERN LIGHTS who has been in great touch this preparation. The five-year-old mare resumed off a long six-month break finishing a creditable second at Dubbo behind Festival Of Light in a BM66 over 1110m. She followed that up by going one better here in Class 2 company over 1200m. With Hugh Bowman aboard, she drew wide (gate 13 of 14) and settled mid-field but the magic of Bowman shone through as he weaved his way through the field to claim a half-length victory. Last start, Greg Ryan jumped aboard for his first ride on the mare and after drawing wide again, had to settle back in the field. Coming wide on the turn, she did her best to run home strongly for third prize in a BM66 at Narromine. Drawn out again here (in gate 10), Ryan remains aboard and with the experience of her last start, he may push forward here to settle a little closer to the speed. She won her only start at the track (two runs back) and the step up in trip here just might do the trick.
