Canberra visitor VALLAURIS (best odds $3.10 with Bet365) has done enough lately to suggest he will be hard to beat today. Last start, the Medaglia d’Oro gelding faced a BM65 on the synthetic track at Canberra where he box-seated most of the way and finished best to win the 1750m event. He ran that trip, 5 lengths slower than benchmark, still the best in this line-up. Ideally drawn in gate four today, he looks to box-seat again from there. Billy Owen is undefeated on the four-year-old, boasting two wins from as many rides and he sticks with the galloper here as well. Already a winner in the wet, he looks the pick of the crop again.
Down in the weights today, Canberra galloper SESTINA (best odds $6 with Bet365) is shooting for the hat-trick here and looks well placed to pull it off. Last start, the Poet’s Voice mare made it two-straight wins when she took the honours in a BM50 over 1000m at Gundagai. Running on her second Heavy 10 in as many starts, she ran the fastest final 800m and 200m sectionals on her way to victory that day. She is up in grade today but does drop 2kgs in the process. Mathew Cahill becomes her third rider in as many starts and after scratchings the six-year-old will jump from gate four and should prove hard to beat from there.
Scratchings have robbed this year’s Cup of a little gloss, however the nine remaining runners will still make it an interesting contest just the same. The Barbara Joseph-trained ROMAN (best odds $7 with TAB) looked a good each-way chance before scratchings and now lines-up a solid winning chance in the smaller field. Last start, the Roman Emperor gelding lined-up in the Tuross Cup at Moruya on a Heavy 8 where Jordan Mallyon made his first ride on the galloper a successful one, finishing too strongly for them, claiming victory by a length on the line. His powerful finish saw him record the fastest final 400m and 200m sectionals for the race that day. That was his third win form six starts in heavy going. He thrives in the conditions which await him here and with Mallyon remaining aboard, he looks the one to beat again.
