OAKBANK TIPS – April 20
Race 1 – 11:56AM O’Leary Walker Benchmark 82 Handicap (Heat 7 Autumn Series) (1400 METRES)It always pays to find horses with a bit of Oakbank form as this track is very unique and some just don’t handle it. GOING GAGA is a previous winner at the track when defeating Triple Spec – who was flying at the time – over 1400m with top weight of 59.5kg. He’s always a horse that improves with a run, and although he finished 4.3 lengths 10th behind Won Ball when first-up over 1250m last start, he was extremely unlucky. He went way back and saved some ground on the inside on the bend but got stopped dead in his tracks and had to switch off heels and start again where he again ran into a dead-end. The run was massive, he handles Oakbank, and he can get us off to a good start.
Race 7 – 3:36PM Ecycle Oakbank Cup (2150 METRES)I’m a big fan of MELI MELO when she’s right, and I think she’s ready to peak on Saturday. This mare has a consistent peak pattern which led me into her multiple times last preparation where she scored at good odds. She needed a few warm up runs this time, and although I tipped her last start at $41 where she ran a gallant 3rd, it was always in the back on my mind that she may be one run short coming off a freshen-up. The form from her 3rd placing last start is strong with the winner, Light The Waves, having won three from his past four, while the 2nd placing Valac was coming off a 2nd at Flemington where he finished 2nd to Hang Man while beating Thunder Cloud home. Meli Melo failed at her only run at Oakbank which is a concern, but she was coming off a maiden win and tackling BM70 grade so I’m willing to forgive that effort as she’s a much better racehorse now.
