Like any maiden event, you can build a case for just about every runner, and here, the Joe Pride-trained SHAZA (best odds $6 with Sportsbet) is no exception. On debut, the Written Tycoon filly found the city class maidens a little too strong, finishing last in a field of ten on Randwick’s Kensington track over 1100m. Pride spelled her immediately and since returning to work, has impressed in two trials at Warwick Farm, winning the first and finishing third in her most recent hit-out. Resuming here, she should find the country maiden class a lot easier to compete with and has the experienced Mitchell Bell in the saddle today. She has the outside gate here but with plenty of early pace inside her, she should get the opportunity to cross and find a sit near mid-field with cover. Taken on trust today, if she has come back with her trial form as a guide, the three-year-old just might give this Maiden event a good shake.

Fresh off a 19-week break, the Weston & Nisbet-trained SMUGGLER’S BAY (best odds $1.85 with BlueBet) looks the testing material here and is our Best Bet 🏆 for the day. Last start, the Squamosa gelding was shooting for a hat-trick when he lined-up in a Class 2 over 1100m at Bathurst. Sent out a white-hot $1.60 favourite, he looked to be in control on straightening but rider Kayla Nisbet had trouble in keeping him straight and his erratic behaviour saw him grabbed by a swooper near the line, leaving him with second prize in the event. He ran that trip, 5.5 lengths slower than benchmark, still the best here. Returning to work this month, he finished third in a Queanbeyan trial nine days ago. The four-year-old won on debut at Wagga and is first-up here. He is nicely drawn in gate three and Kayla Nisbet remains in the saddle. On fresh legs, he can take this one out today.

The Brad Widdup-trained MISS MAGNUM (best odds $4.60 with Sportsbet) is three starts into this preparation and should be at peak fitness for this contest. Last start, the Magnus mare finished just behind the placegetters at Bathurst in a Class 1 over 1100m. Despite missing out on a podium finish that day, the mare ran home well that day after being inconvenienced from crowding by the eventual winner who shifted in on her in the final 200m. She ran her last 600m in even time, the best here by more than three lengths. Rising a little in distance today, she meets similar company and from gate seven, maps to settle nicely behind the early pace. Mitchell Bell is back in the saddle for his second ride on the mare and with a clear crack at them in the run home, she can threaten here today.
