The Bill Freedman-trained HIGHEST STANDARD is certainly well on the way to living up to his name with three wins from his six starts to date and with a dry track forecast here, can easily make it four. Last start, the Your Song gelding came across his first wet track and clearly showed his disliking to it, finishing last (of 14) in a Class 3 at Muswellbrook. Although he finished it off 15 lengths slower than benchmark, that was still the 3rd best effort here. Go back three starts where he tackled a Class 2 at Tamworth. On a Good 4 that day, he got home in the 1200m event in a tight finish. That day, he finished up 6.9 lengths slower than benchmark ,the best in this field. Today, the stable fits a tongue tie for the first time with Rory Hutchings partnering the gelding, also for the first time. He maps to settle mid-field from gate six and as long as the track remains dry, he could be winning on his first look at the Orange track.

A field of 12 line up for this year’s Cup and finding form at the right time is the Roy McCabe-trained RENALOT who looks ideally placed to take this out. Last start, the Camelot mare was coming off a win in the Orange Cup Prelude (1600m) which she won comfortably in the end. She ran the fastest final 200m sectional that day. She then took her place in the Wellington Cup (1700m) and sent out a $12 chance, ran home strongly to grab third prize that day. This is good lead-up form coming into this contest. Jay Ford returns for the ride after steering her into second place at Wyong three starts back. From gate six, she maps to settle two or three pairs back off the pace and if she can get a genuine pace up front, she will be threatening them halfway down the straight. She won the Prelude, now for the Cup itself.

In good touch since resuming, Goulburn galloper BOMBDIGGITY will be at peak fitness here and looks great each-way value in this company. Last start, the Zoustar gelding came off a fourth placing in a Randwick BM72 over 1000m. He lined up in a 900m sprint at Albury where he sat outside the leader and hung on well to finish third in the 13-strong field. He ran that trip, 4.3 lengths slower than benchmark, just three lengths behind the best here set by Miss Scorcher who resumes today. Drawn nicely in gate four, he maps to get the run of the race and with a trouble-free run, he can give this field a real fright at odds today.
