This looks to be a suitable race for YAMATAI to notch up her first career win. The Adam Durrant mare takes on the fellow Maiden gallopers in Race 2 of the day over the 1400m and resumed with a runner-up performance behind Great Waters on August 5 at Belmont. On that occasion, she settled in a midfield spot and ran on strongly in the straight but couldn’t quite match the winner, going down by under half a length. She went three lengths slower than overall benchmark, which is ok for this class and quicker than anything that her rivals have produced in their careers so far. The daughter of Nicconi is likely to improve off that run and from barrier 3 she can lead or take a sit on what doesn’t look to be a strenuous tempo early on.

Her strike rate of one win from 21 starts might suggest otherwise but LOOKS LIKE MAGIC can go close in the final event of the day. The five-year-old took until start number 16 to break her maiden and has been solid in her five runs since, placing in two of her past three. She couldn’t quite match them in Saturday grade last time, finishing 7th to Don’s Legacy but prior to that she featured in a Class 1 at Pinjarra over the 1200m, overcoming a wide run throughout to hit the line well, missing out by a length and filling the exacta behind Great Heist. With Kyra Yuill on board, she is likely tp push forward from barrier 9 and with a possible muddling tempo, she should be in it for a long way.
