Race 1 – 12:40PM SCA LiSTNR Benchmark 68 Handicap (1200 METRES)

LEONARDA (Best Odds Currently $4.80 with Bet365) made a long searching run over the 1498m here following her let-up. The leader, Sizzling Bullet had kicked on straightening, as Leonarda understandably peaked on her run under the 58kg. She followed up with an effort behind some sharp sprinters over 1200m at her latest start. Never shirked the task and got very close to both Rushwa and Kissable Eight on the line. Fit and well, back to a mile suits and will be hard to beat with the claim for Felicity Atkinson

We were on MELHOOPEN (Best Odds Currently $2.80 with Ladbrokes)) here last start. Initially I thought Melhoopen was a shade disappointing to run second to a horse like Prince Saiyan. The horse the winner beat in his trial, Montign, has since scored a fighting on debut at Penola. Anyway, Ryan Hurdle sat outside the leader with her over the 1200m here. The field did not look overly strong, and with that leader falling away, Melhoopen shot for home on turning. Prince Saiyan had the quiet run on her back, and peeled out to challenge. Melhoopen perhaps did not see out the 1200m, with Conge also flashing home late to cause a dead-heat for second. Wide draw no spoil, however back to the 1100m suits.

We marked DESIDERO (Best Odds Currently $3.90 with Betstar) as an SA Blackbooker early this prep. The note was to wait until the Port Augusta racing season rolls around, and he finds a suitable race now. Last couple perhaps weren’t his best, his form prior however, sees him on song to be winning here. Desidero had the misfortune to run into a rampant Fulton Street over the mile here three starts back. While the Hawker Cup winner left him in his wake, Desidero had also left a margin back to the others. Grant Young has booked young gun Lizzie Annells, who actually rode Fulton Street home that day. She’ll no doubt be positive early on the natural forward-running type, and they’ll be hard to get past.
