Here are our Rockhampton race tips for today.

Back on his home track today, the Jared Wehlow-trained HIGHMASTER (best odds $1.85 with PlayUp) is first-up today and boasting a good fresh record, looks right in the mix here. Last start, the Poet’s Voice gelding ended his previous campaign with a close-up second in a Class 3 over 1800m at Mackay. That day, the stable put the blinkers on for the first time and on settling the galloper (who was overracing) ended up more than eight lengths in front with Ash Butler having trouble containing him. To his credit, he was beaten less than half a length on the line in a bizarre performance. He ran the trip, half a length quicker than benchmark, the best in this line-up. He resumes today from an 18-week break but has returned to work in good fashion, knocking up that trial win here two weeks ago. Wehlow has responded to that last-start performance and taken off the blinkers for today’s contest. The five-year-old has a solid first-up record, placing three times from four previous fresh runs. Butler retains the ride today and on fresh legs, with the blinkers off, he looks the one to beat.

The Adrian Coome-trained MAGNATE (best odds $1.85 with bet365) has been the proverbial bridesmaid after 20 race starts but today lines-up with the best chance yet of shaking that Maiden monkey tag of his back and taking home the cash here. Last start, the Written Tycoon gelding was in the mix again, finishing a close-up second in a Mackay maiden over 1300m. Hitting the lead in side the final 200m, he was again grabbed by a swooper and had to settle for the runner-up’s cheque on the day. He ran the trip, half a length quicker than benchmark, the best in this field. Les Tilley is legged aboard for his second ride on the galloper who returns for his sixth home-track appearance. Drawn the fence today, he maps to settle just off the pace (with cover) and enjoying a soft run from there, he should be pushing his way clear to have the last crack at them in the run home. Today looks like the day for him.

Jared Wehlow saddles-up ONLY WANNA SING here (best odds $2.40 with bet365) and boasting an outstanding home-track record, he looks the best of the day here. Last start, the Your Song gelding took on Open company at Townsville (where he is undefeated after three starts there) over 1200m. With 61kgs to carry, Ryan Wiggins took him straight to the front and from there, it was just a matter of by how far. He showed a great turn of foot on straightening and left the rest to fight over the minors as he put 3.5 lengths on them over the line. He ran that out, 1.7 lengths slower than benchmark, the best in this field. He also posted the fastest final 800m-200m sectionals for the event. With Wiggins not riding here today, Ash Butler takes the reins who has steered the galloper to three previous wins himself. He draws the outside gate today, but in the small (8-horse) field, that won’t play a major role here. He still maps to cross and lead and already boasting five wins from his seven starts at the track, he will take a ton of catching today.
