Just one win from 16 starts is nothing to write home about but trainer Rod Northam seems to have TANGO STEPZ right where he wants her and she looms as the one to beat here. Last start, the Sidestep mare was third-up from a nine-month absence and looked good as she finished third in a Highway Class 2 at Randwick. She settled mid-field among the 14 starters and ran home strongly over the final 300m to go down by 1.5 lengths on the line. That was a big effort after stepping up from a Class 1 at Gosford where she ran second that day. She ran a personal best last start, covering the 1000m, 5.8 lengths quicker than benchmark, the best in this field by 10 lengths. Today, she drops back to a country Class 1 and really should be carrying more than 59.5kgs here. Ideally drawn in gate two, she maps to be box-seating on settling and will take a ton of beating from there.

In from $16 overnight, the money is already starting to come for ADIOS STEVE being a known wet-tracker and with the track already downgraded to a Soft 7 this morning, he lines up here still at good value and looking the one to beat. Last start, he was first-up off a 20-week break and after landing in front on settling, fought like a tiger to the end, getting swamped on the line to end up fifth, still beaten less than a length in the end. He finished the race, 7.7 lengths slower than benchmark but that was still good enough to rate second best in this line up. Whilst he has the wet track form on his resume to boast about, he still has to ‘shake the monkey’ with his efforts at the Scone track, finishing unplaced in all three previous visits. However, that can change today. Trainer Allan Denham fits the tongue tie here for the first time and although drawn out today, there is very little early speed inside him which should make it easy for Andrew Gibbons to secure a preferred sit for his first ride on the three-year-old. Second-up and fitter, he can give this a real fright.

We go from a field of 14 to no third place payout here with just the seven runners left after scratchings to do battle. Still showing good value, the Sam Kavanagh-trained MABEL JOSEPHINE is a distinct chance of rolling the odds-on favourite (Akasawa) in this contest. Last start, the Dalakhani mare was third-up, coming off a solid second-up win, when finishing third at Newcastle in a BM64 over 1500m. That day, she settled too far back and on the wet track, found it too big a job to reel in the leaders. She still ran her final 600m, half a length quicker than benchmark, the second best here. She probably jumps from gate three today (after the withdrawals) and will settle just behind the speed. She should fight this out with Akasawa with maybe the 2.5kg weight advantage telling in the end.
