Yeppoon Tips Tuesday September 28
Looking for Yeppoon racing tips and best bets for today? Our form expert previews racing at Yeppoon Racecourse and gives his top selections for the meeting.
Located 40 kilometres east of Rockhampton, the coastal town of Yeppoon holds a handful of meetings per year.
Here are our Yeppoon tips for today.
Race 1 - 1:42PM GREAT NORTHERN QTIS Three-Year-Old Handicap (1300 METRES)
The Olivia Cairns-trained FIRE KING (best odds $2.50 with BlueBet) has been a glowing model of consistency since making his debut and he lines up here in what appears to be a two-horse race today. Last start, the Worthy Cause gelding made it seven-straight top-two finishes when he beat all but one home in a Three-Year-Old challenge over 1300m at Mackay. Beaten on the day, he still ran his last 600m, 3.8 lengths quicker than benchmark, the best in this field. He also posted the fastest final 800m sectional for the event. Here, he clashes with Blue Jacket (again) who finished third (more than a length back) behind Fire King in that Mackay contest. This will be a race of tactics (no doubt) with Fire King (gate two) drawn inside Blue Jacket (gate three), giving Ash Butler (on Fire King) the opportunity to keep Ryan Wiggins (on Blue Jacket) out wide. Neither runner has seen the Yeppoon track before so there is no advantage there. Being as he beat him home last start and they meet at the same weights as last start, Fire King looks a little overs today and by far the better value.
Race 4 - 3:34PM PROSTATE CANCER AWARENESS MONTH BENCHMARK 70 Handicap (1400 METRES)
The Jarrod Wehlow-trained HIGHMASTER (best odds $2.60 with bet365) is first-up here but a recent Yeppoon trial suggests he poised to strike on fresh legs today. Last start, the Poet’s Voice gelding ended his last campaign winless, but took home second prize in a Class 3 Plate over 1880m at Mackay. That day, the stable put the blinkers on for the first time and on settling the galloper (who was overracing) ended up more than eight lengths in front with Ash Butler having trouble containing him. To his credit, he was beaten less than half a length on the line in a bizarre performance. He ran the trip. Half a length quicker than benchmark, the best in this line-up. He resumes today from an 18-week break but has returned to work in good fashion, knocking up that trial win here two weeks ago. Wehlow has responded to that last-start performance and taken off the blinkers for today’s contest. The five-year-old has a solid first-up record, placing three times from four previous fresh runs. Ryan Wiggins makes the trip up from Brisbane to take the reins today and from gate two, will be looking to lead all the way here. With the blinkers off today, he looks the one to beat.
Race 5 - 4:12PM GRAEME ARTHUR DOUGAN MEMORIAL Class 3 Plate (1100 METRES)
The Pat Brennan-trained KRAVITZ (best odds $1.35 with Sportsbet) is shooting for the hat-trick here and his current market price suggests he will do it on three legs. Last start, the Toorak Toff gelding came off a Class 1 win at Rockhampton when he made his track debut here. He made it look easy that day, putting 1.5 lengths on a field in a BM60 over 1200m, carrying 62kgs. He is up in grade today but drops 3kgs for the event. Brad Pengelly steered the galloper to that Rockhampton win two starts back and returns here for this ride. He maps to settle mid-field here from gate five and should enjoy a sit with cover in the run. The four-year-old is at the top of his game and a clear run to the line should see him cross the line ahead of this field. He is at skinny odds but is well worth some thought as an anchor for multibets today.
