Happy Valley Tips – JANUARY 15
Race 6 – THE HONG KONG CLUB CHALLENGE CUP (CLASS 4) 1200M
11-time NZ premier trainer Paul O’Sullivan has a promising gelding here with MEHBOOB lining up for his ninth race start. The nicely-bred gelding took seven appearances to finally break his maiden, after consecutive minor placings. Last start, he came back in distance and still ran well to beat all but G-Unit in another Class 4 on this track. By Snippetson out of a mare by the Golden Slipper winning Rory’s Jester, he is clearly bred for speed with jockey Matthew Chadwick happy to remain aboard where he has been since the four-year-old’s first race start. Drawn sweetly in gate four here, he looks perfectly placed to give this a real shake.
Race 8 – CONNAUGHT HANDICAP (CLASS 3) 1000M
This shapes up as a great contest with several winning chances to face the starter. I’m running with the Tony Cruz-trained FLYING GENIUS who is shooting for the hat-trick here. After a trial win at Sha Tin, he stepped out here off a four-week let-up and was a very impressive winner when taking on Class 4 company for the first time, winning the 1000m event by 1.5 lengths. Last start, his victory at the same track and distance was even more impressive. He took on similar company, and with 60.5kgs on his back and jumping from the outside gate (12), he was ridden wisely by Karis Teetan to take the prize that night. Teetan pushed forward to take the lead and slowed the pace then found a second wind to beat them home by almost two lengths. Here, he rises to Class 3 company for the first time but drops 5kgs in weight and has drawn ideally in gate 4 with Teetan remaining aboard. He is sure to be pushed by some of these but he is capable of a bold showing.
