Apollo Stakes Tips – looks a battle in three

Apollo Stakes Tips

2020 Apollo Stakes Tips and Preview:

A field of 10 have assembled for Saturday’s Group 2 Apollo Stakes (1400m) at Randwick where three runners clearly standout.

I’d be gobsmacked if the winner came outside of Happy Clapper, Dreamforce or Alizee.

Six of the ten runners are middle distance to staying types resuming, and neither have the first-up credentials over this distance on rain-affected ground to figure in the finish.

The other, Glenall, has a poor record at the track and distance and is the lowest rated horse in the field.

That leaves the aforementioned trio to fight out the finish; but which will pass the post first?

Happy Clapper was 2nd to Winx in the Apollo Stakes last year and was runner-up to Samadoubt when first-up in the Winx Stakes (1400m) during the spring.

He’s such a warhorse and I’m reluctant to dismiss him, but I’m concerned if the track is heavily rain-affected, a first-up run over 1400m will turn into more of a mile race and he may be underdone.

Dreamforce defeated Te Akau Shark first-up in the Tramway Stakes (1400m) last spring, and that explosive performance rated 9.9 lengths quicker than standard BM.

Dreamforce has trialled twice with blinkers off and heads into his first-up assignment with them off too, and that’s a concern as it seems they are leaving something up their sleeve for a later date.

Again, Dreamforce is first-up, and he did feel the pinch late when first-up last campaign, and I’m worried the testing conditions could leave him vulnerable late.

Apollo Stakes Best Bet:

Alizee is the one with a fitness run under her belt, and it was a cracking run at that.

She was last as they straightened in the Expressway Stakes (1200m) and had to take a run through the field.

Standout built a big enough lead at the top of the straight and Alizee was unable to run him down as she went 4.6 lengths quicker than BM.

Last campaign Alizee posted a first-up figure of 3.8 lengths quicker than BM and then spiked second-up going 17.5 lengths above BM in the Memsie Stakes (1400m).

That was a career best for Alizee, and if she can spike second-up over 1400m again, she’s the one to beat.

Track Condition a Slight Concern:

My only concern is the rain-affected track as she’s unproven on it.

Her only runs on really rain-affected ground were her first three starts where she finished 4th, 2nd and 5th on a Soft 7, Soft 7 and Heavy 8 respectively.

She turned that around next campaign winning three from six, including the Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m), and maybe it was due to firmer ground, or maybe it was due to maturity.

Saturday will be a real test for Alizee, but provided she gets through the ground as good as Happy Clapper and Dreamforce, she looks the top pick.
